This is poor bonus in that case because iTunes gift cards are regularly on sale for 15% off so you’re better off waiting for that unless you need the funds ASAP.

That’s right. It’s only a 9% discount ([1 – $100/$110] × 100% = 9%). The best I’ve seen—though rarely, only—for iTunes gift cards purchased online is $100 value for $80 outlay, a 20% discount.

Anyone else in Canada having trouble right now with the App store not loading? I was wondering if there is an outage.

Nice promo Apple! Saves me the extra step of having to buy discounted gift cards through eBay. Please do more of these in the future!

Discounts are very uncharacteristic for Apple. First discounts on HomePod and now discounts on loading money on to Apple ID. I wonder where this philosophical change came from. Maybe it’s a hallmark of Apple becoming a services company where fluctuating prices are necessary to compete.

I’m not ready to panic yet but this does worry me.

Also, do not forget;
  • Apple offers bonus when topping up Apple ID
  • Apple discount HomePod
  • Apple offers discount for veterans
  • Costco discount Apple products
  • Japanese carrier discount iPhone XR
  • Kuo claims weak iPhone XR demand (not confirmed)
Must be doing well. :D

While I appreciate the discounts, it worries me that Apple is deviating from Steve Jobs concept that if you build the best products that you can make, then the value to shareholders will come. Steve didn’t aim to satisfy the shareholders. He just built incredible products and the share price went up as a result. Not the other way around.

I’m not ready to panic yet but this does worry me.

Yes, it does seem like an end-of-quarter desperation move to book as much revenue as possible, specifically in the Services category. Along with the widespread discounts on Apple products (see Watch Series 4 on Amazon for $414), it looks like they are in panic mode. Earnings call should be interesting as they refuse to break out their (presumably low) iPhone numbers.

Just worked for me. Now have $220 balance for only $200. Thanks.
Did not work for me. Tried on iPhone and iPad. Talked to three app,e people anf the last one said my account was not authorized to make this purchase. Try back in 24 hours. I have a developer account with these people.

I would take advantage of this, however, I don't really make any purchase at iTune or App Store. I would buy something at the Apple Store for sure.

Merry Xmas to everyone outside of the USA.
Thanks for all the money you spent with Apple, however if you want a discount or a bonus...SOD OFF.

And this is yet another reason why Apple products were NOT part of my Xmas shopping list.

Yep - as others have said - 15% off iTunes cards is a pretty standard discount - Best Buy offered 20% on Black Friday. 10% isn't really worth bothering.

In New Zealand, iTunes cards have not been discounted for years. We used to buy them for the kids as stocking fillers when we could get them at a discounted price. Have not bought anything through the iTunes Store for years now, I know I have about $70 there but to be honest, I get better deals elsewhere.

I misread what this was for. I thought it was to add it to your Apple Pay Cash wallet, not to your Apple ID.

I just bought $200 worth of iTunes cash for only $180 from Target. Now I will apply the code and gain another $20 from Apple. There's no reason to wait when you can do both right now.

Nice to see deals direct from Apple, but I prefer the 23-24-ish% off I snagged with Costco on some $100 GCs to pad my account. I wish Apple would just do this directly in the future, but I'll take a deal when I can get one...

Doesn't work for me at $200. Received an error message that it could not complete the request and to contact iTunes support. (US, California)

Apple is rolling out a new promotion that offers customers a 10 percent bonus when adding funds directly to their Apple ID account in the United States between December 17-20. The bonus applies once on up to $200 and was first highlighted by Japanese blog Mac Otakara.

The funds can be used towards purchases on the iTunes Store and App Store, an iCloud storage subscription, and so forth.

To add funds directly to an Apple ID, go to Settings > Your Name > iTunes & App Store and tap your Apple ID > View Apple ID. Sign in if necessary, tap "Add Funds to Apple ID," tap the amount that you want to add, and confirm your selection. There's also a shortcut available at the bottom of the App Store.

Adding funds to an Apple ID requires having a valid payment method on file and is particularly useful for prepaid credit cards.

I don't think that is possible (and Apple is smarter than that.) Adding money from your iTunes account SHOULD be processed from your payment method, not any existing money loaded via Gift Card.

(If this does work, I would be shocked.)

Interesting. I'm just about to pull the trigger to switch from Amazon Music Unlimited to Apple Music now that they support the Echo. I pay yearly for Amazon Music so "paying" for a year of Apple Music is already budgeted so this seems like a good way to go about it!
Protip: buy iTunes gift cards at a discount or use this promo to add the money to your Apple ID and then use the sometimes hidden option to prepay for Apple Music for a whole year in advance for $99. That’ll save you 20% over paying month to month, plus the savings you get from a discounted iTunes gift card or this promotion.

I have a separate Apple ID for my iCloud storage, and in that circumstance, there doesn't seem to be any way to add funds to the account. There is no path for Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Apple ID > View Apple ID.

If anyone knows an alternate method or workaround, please post.

Thanks.

You can go to iTunes on a computer, and go to the "account" menu and choose "view my account" and log in with the account to which you want to add the funds.

Then scroll down to "Apple ID account" then see "Add funds to your Apple ID. Instantly." See image below.

You’re misunderstanding how this works. What you got from Target you’re adding as an iTunes gift card. What you’re adding from this promo is adding ‘cash’ from your linked bank account. You’re not going to get this promo by adding an iTunes gift card to your account.

Let's say half of Apple users take this "bonus". $200 a pop, less 10% in Apple's bank account to do with what they will, or just collect the interest for a few days....cha ching...10% back is a pin point in that equation.

Apple thanks you...

That's the whole game of Apple Pay Cash too. I wonder how much money Venmo, PayPal etc are holding at any given point...

If half of Apple accounts put in $200: 249M x $200 is $49,800,000,000 deposited into Apple accounts. Less the $20 "bonus" that's $44,820,000,000 in Apple accounts. Half of Apple users 249M x $180 only cost Apple $4,980,000,000 out of pocket. At standard 3% (which my guess is much higher with Apple's financial experts in house looking for the best return) savings account rates, they would clear $1,344,600,000.....profit! This is the reason why Apple wants in this game? Essentially the iTunes cards discounted work the same way. It's all just cash sitting there earning before it's used. Also why it takes seconds to take money from your debit card but 3-5 days to get it back. Retailers are making money on every dime they hold, they want it as long as they can keep it.

[doublepost=1545070543][/doublepost]Why bother? I can use facebook to send and receive money at ease without any fees!

OH! You're paying for it! You just don't see WHAT you're paying for it.

I often get paid for services through Venmo. We are not talking about chump change, either. I have had it out with the highest tier of customer service about how long it takes to give me my money. Nobody on their end seems to understand (or care) that them holding $1000+ of my money for a week is the same as an interest-free, week-long loan. Ask them to give you an interest-free, week-long loan and they'll laugh at you.

It gets deducted from your store credit automatically, from my experience. I think it just bills from there first before it hits any other payment methods you have. The invoice for my iCloud (and any movie I rent, in-app purchases, etc) all say "Billed to Store Credit".

it's probably less of a philosophical change and more of a one time prize to promote the fact that you can add funds to an apple ID without having to buy a gift card. i don't see it there but at one time you could add a QR code to your apple wallet and use that at apple stores to add funds. I set up one for each of my nieces and nephews so I could gift their accounts on their birthdays and such

This crossed my mind but unfortunately, Apple doesn't offer an annual option for the Family Plan which is what I'm going for. Gotta have them simultaneous streams! Thanks for the tip though!
