Anyone else find it... interesting that Macs and the Apple Watch both had an issue with not being able to charge from a depleted state around the same time?

It makes me wonder if they share charging circuit design and firmware. Pretty wild that a smart watch would be using the same code as a full-on laptop!
I would call it clever “IP management” if they indeed share circuits/parts or such across product lines...
it looks odd though...

All things considered these units were recently released and would be covered under the regular 1 year warranty. This “offer” isn’t really anything special.. there is nothing “impressive” about covering a defect under the original 1 year warranty. The regular warranty covers defects in workmanship like we’ve seen here.

If this was a program being offered for 2-3 year old units, then we can talk.
My watch was broken (swollen battery) after 3 years and Apple exchange it for free.

As someone who currently has a 15” Macbook Pro with a line of dead pixels down the center of the screen that are 99% due to a bad screen flex cable design I disagree somewhat. Had another Macbook Pro die on me years ago that was obviously due to a well documented issue with certain faulty logic board designs. Wasn’t covered by Apple because mine wasn’t in the serial number range they deemed was affected even though the issue was pinpointed to the exact same problem by an Apple certified repair center 🤦🏻‍♂️.

I’d say they are hit and miss when it comes to acknowledging problematic issues. It seems like whenever it points in the direction of a design flaw they go to great lengths to subdue the issue. Maybe that’s because they sell so many units that the number of repairs/swaps they would have to make would cost a lot. That‘s just a bit of a dick move for a company that prides themselves on great design AND is the richest company in the world.

All said the above update mentioned in the article might explain why I had a Series 5 watch die on my during Xmas. Happy they exchanged mine for free and can fix it via software!
I guess it’s a hit or miss. A friend of mine bought a 2015 15 inch MBP from a company auction, had a swollen battery issue. Took it to the store, paid like 200 dollars to get it replaced, they gave him a brand new 2015 instead.

Actually… Series 5 was released in 2019, so not quite

As I began reading this post, I couldn't help but notice that the 10:09 on the screen in the OP's mockup was top-aligned with the digital crown - which struck me as un-Apple.
"Huh... I would expect center-aligned" I actually said aloud (thanks pandemic).
Curious, I placed my 44mm s5 into Power Reserve and confirmed that the time readout is actually center-aligned with the digital crown.

Clearly I have more time on my hands than is healthy. 😜

Just tried to update my AW4 but it says that I’m current on 7.3, no update‘s available, is this only for series 5 & up?

Just saw the update... and after reading what it fixes I rushed the update...

Clearly you do... ;) my guess is that isn't aligned at all, but drifting around in that area to prevent burn in.

Apple did exactly this for the 3 year old watches that had their displays come off due to battery swelling. No need to talk; just recognize that Apple does plenty of good will post warranty replacements (as they should.)

I’d like to assume that it’s free because of how long it’ll probably take cause of Covid as well as a source of information of where to improve.

I long for the good old days (actually not that long ago -- in the early iPhone days) when Apple would VOLUNTARILY AND AUTOMATICALLY REPLACE A FAULTY PRODUCT WITH A NEW ONE even if the faulty product can be quite easily repaired like the battery in this case. Sigh.

Use Time Machine then when iPhone was an exclusive club.

There is so much volume coming through AppleCare depots daily that makes it very practical to have a healthy cycle of refurbs in the system.

What exactly is supposed to happen when I put it on the charger? My 5 restarts and then charges is that normal?

That's probably part of the fix, it'll just determine if it cannot charge, force the reboot and charge.

I wonder if I can send mine in for that reason.. might refresh my battery? or.. free upgrade? jk they won’t do that

I put my S5 on charge last night, woke up and it’s broke! Won’t turn on at all. Looked at what iOS I’m running and it’s iOS 7.3 🤦‍♂️ Rang Apple support and they are sending me a replacement. Annoying that I’ve been on a 105 day fitness streak that I’ll now lose 🥲 On the plus side I did have a few scratches on the watch, at least I’ll have a new fresh one!
