I was really hoping that they were just waiting until the next WiFi standard to come out to release new AirPort base stations. I'm sad that they're being discontinued.

However, I do wonder: What will they recommend to replace the Time Capsule for networked backup purposes? We can still do Time Machine backups to local USB drives, but retiring the Time Capsule leaves a big hole for this application.

I knew Apple was in the WiGig Alliance, but had done nothing. I guessed they might be developing something. Google brought me to the 'Apple HoloLens'!
There might be a related Airport Pro?

I use a TimeCapsule (802.11ac)+ airport extreme (802.11n) + two express (802.11n) for a solid house wide signal.
I have two 1st generation airport express (802.11g) I use for airplay to outside speakers.
One of my airport express provides ethernet to a windows computer.
All apple devices on WiFi.
Using an Airport express for internet to a Samsung TV; not so good!

Synology ds3612xs
I back up to external hard drives using the time machine application.
recently had to use back up after a snafu with mojave. worked perfectly

A “snafu” huh? Cute.

Yeah i was thinking of getting an express and put it downstairs so I don't have to deal with my devices connecting to the crappy router downstairs and having to manually disconnect and reconnect from it and the Airport Extreme upstairs. It would work, right? Seamlessly?

If by easy to setup and use, yes. If by seamlessly connecting to other Mac routers, yes.
[doublepost=1534870480][/doublepost]Also as an aside, I found the older AirPort Utility software on MR Forums. It's really nice because it allows you to see all DHCP clients, graphs of wireless signal, etc.

Three, I have done it. My first gen AirPort Express juist met the bottom of the trash can. After bying a mesh-system two years ago I never looked back. There IS life after Apple. Thank the Great Guy in the sky for that, as a company that erodes it’s ecosysteem like this opens the doors for some great competition. Be bold, chin up and charge!!!

I don't get why people are offended when Apple exits a product category because it's become commoditized or because others are already doing it better. There's no benefit for them or to us for them to keep working on a product that's at best going to be no better and more expensive.

What you did was exactly what Apple wanted you to do... move on.

I bought a 2nd Gen Airport Express (b/g/n) yesterday, 2nd User for £15. Plugged it in, set it up - works a treat. Better than the stock wifi on my Virgin Media Router.
I will keep using it until it packs in, much like other Apple products I have.
Just because Apple stopped selling or supporting a product, doesnt mean it's useless and you should bin it.

What MESH setup did you buy and why?

Please recycle it, e-waste is horribly bad for the planet. Best Buy will give you a 15% off coupon on networking gear and Apple will recycle it for free as well.

Nice necro thread. Me, I've tried Eero, orbi, and most recently velop and none can compete with my 3 5th gen Time capsules in raw speed. I haven't seen a 3 antenna (dedicated 5ghz ones) mesh router/satellite setup yet. They're all just capped at 2 antennas for 5ghz ergo limiting you to 867mb max speeds whilst the last gen TC's are capable of over 1gb/sec. (And no the wireless backhaul antennas which are always included in the specs don't help me at all as I have a wired backhaul setup)

I will add Eero to the growing list. My  extreme couldn't cover my house well. My Eero with two beacons covers everything very well.
I will admit that when  announced end of life for the  routers, that convinced me and I made the jump.

You shouldn't throw those out; they still make great AirPlay targets; you can turn any sound system into an AirPlay capable sound system with one of those.

I have one in the spare room giving AirPlay capability to a 1980s vintage receiver. It's awesome.

Well said. It sometimes looks like Apple is pushing their customers away. If they axed it because they could focus better on their other product categories I would understand, but these ‘new’ products like the iPod touch are laughable. Get an Android with better everything for that,

Eero is owned by amazon though... I couldn’t do that.

Which Android product is better at accessing all my iTunes media? ;)

I'm still using my 2TB Time Capsule and it works well, but I have a feeling that I'm living on borrowed time.
What I meant is that you could buy a better android phone with better screen, more storage for that price. Being stuck on iTunes means you got trapped in Apple’s eco. I will never ever want to have the feeling being trapped again. I used not to care about that in the past because Apple was miles ahead of others. Today it’s the opposite and that doesn’t justify their excessive pricing anymore.

They needed to make the HomePod.

Lol, it’s still not officially introduced by Apple here and with an half deaf Siri who doesn’t understand much, it won’t be a success for the price. Apple introduced the HomePod with big noise.... but after the noise it went silent in upgrading and further development of the HomePod. If they took them serious, there would be a version II by now already.
