Apple has updated its vintage and obsolete products list to include the iPhone 5, six years after the smartphone's launch.

The iPhone 5 is now classified by the company as vintage in the United States and Turkey, and obsolete in the rest of the world. The addition was spotted by Japanese blog Mac Otakara.

Apple defines vintage products as those that have not been manufactured for more than five but less than seven years. Macs and other products on the vintage and obsolete list are generally no longer eligible for hardware service.

The iPhone 5 introduced some major design changes to Apple's smartphone lineup when it was announced in September 2012.

New features included a lighter aluminum-based body, a taller screen with a nearly 16:9 aspect ratio, LTE support, and Apple's A6 system-on-chip.

The iPhone 5 was also the first Apple smartphone to include a Lightning port, replacing the 30-pin design used by previous iPhone models.

I remember how much people here hated this phone when it was introduced :)

In fairness, it wasn't that great. Had massive issues with flaking on the case and the battery failure rate was appalling. It was my least favourite iPhone I've ever used at just 6 months of ownership, but the 5S the following year was almost perfect.

Most people's criticism came from the lack of a 30 pin charger/adapter, though! Crazy how times change.

It's in human nature to never be content.

This looks fair to me. Even if I had the iPhone 5, and it was my only phone, I wouldn't complain.

After all, I do not think that I would even remotely think of taking it to Apple for repair, either.

I will rue the day that the iPhone 5's younger sibling, the iPhone SE, is added to that list of "obsolete" devices. It will mark the end of an era of iPhones that can be operated one-handed in a comfortable, natural way.

I am surprised this didn’t happen already considering the 5 is a 6 year old device.

I have one at home and it still works great after all those years.

Well you must have got one without a bad battery and a non-flaking case.
That's right. It has a dent in it but that was my mistake. It has a yellow tinted screen though. On iOS 6 it wasn't really an issue, but after updating to iOS 7 it got pretty obvious.

It isn’t long since I upgraded from a 5 to an SE, a continuation of my favourite iPhone form factor. I don’t see anything I want to upgrade to, so I hope it is a long time before the SE is classified as obsolete.
Apple have only recently dropped it so it will be supported for at least another two years.

You must must have small hands then.

Good night, sweet prince.

While my excitement for this phone didn’t match the 4’s, I still thought it was a terrific device.

Same. I gave mine to my Nana and she loves it. I have to occasionally use it to change stuff for her and it runs better than my iPhone 6 later in its life.

Good riddance. Worst iPhone I’ve ever owned. Went through 5 of them due to dust under the camera lens.

This was my first iPhone, I still love the form factor and the chambered edges. It served me well and it’s what made me fall in love with Apple products. I feel like a part of history is gone. I’m happy that I was part of that history making.

RIP iPhone 5

Although sad; I can't see anyone taking one of these to Apple for repair...

I witnessed a coworker call AppleCare about an iPhone 5 battery replacement yesterday. It still runs great but battery life is only 4-5 hours. They were told to upgrade or seek third party options, which is what we’ve been telling him for months.

Tell them it’s super easy to change the battery I bought the kit off amazon and did it myself. I kept my iPhone 5 another year and half after that.

The 5's design still looks good today. It has really aged well.

So far IMHO the 3G/S, 6/S, 7/S, and 8 designs won't age well. The original, 4/S 5/S/SE, and X/S designs so far will be the classic designs that define what an iPhone looks like.

You must must have small hands then.

What a weird comment. My hands barely fit in a size 8.5 glove and I found the iPhone 5 frustrating.

Agreed. I would love them to return, or at the least see the new iPad look in an iPhone.
