Gosh!. This inane diatribe is still going?... :D

What diatribe? Its a scientific fact that liberal minded people (mind you VERY liberal minded people) have a chemical make up that causes en extremely high conductivity in their skin which seems to effect the signal input/output of external antenna's :)

Being staunchly conservative I have no problems with antenna's. In fact I find touching an antenna actually improves my reception :)

So........

A question that hasn't been clearly answered is:

Is the iPhone 4 WITH CASE reception/signal strength as good or better than the iPhone 3G/3GS?

If somebody can give me some information on this that is based on science/fact/or published info that would be great.

I would also appreciate people's personal experiences as well.

Thanks very much.

"Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong."

I love how Apple thinks its customers are idiots. So we are to believe that Apple has not figured this out after 4 years of making a handset?

I think they did that on purpose to prop up how bad ATT service was so that people wont notice for the past 4 years.

I'm in my house right now with an iPhone 4 w/bumper. Normally I have 1 or no bars with a 3GS where I am sitting. With the iP4 and bumper I am getting 1 bar

My non scientific test reveals no increase in signal strength with an Apple bumper. The only difference noticed is a slight tendency to hold a signal.

So I returned it to Apple & the new one does not exhibit this characteristic.

Does Apple publish lists of "Most returned items"? I wonder if the Iphone4 tops the list.

Known for their secrecy, Apple only discloses what they're forced to. Based on the public outcry, the vast number of reports, and the buzz I hear at work from the large number of iPhone 4 owners (we have 800+ employed) I'd guess this _is_ Apples most returned product.

That said, it's but a bump in Apples road paved in gold. They've mastered the art of spin & hype, therefore I doubt this will be of any significance for them. Apple has a very unique, cult like following of massive proportions. Their willingness to believe whatever the CEO tells them is very fascinating.

This is not scientific, but is anecdotal (just me):

iPhone 3GS, would always show 4-5 bars at my house, would drop calls/refuse to make calls about 15% of the time. AT&T tried every trick in the book, new SIM, new iphone 3GS, still a problem. Finally the admitted on the phone to me "the problem is our networked is overwhelmed with data. Our towers can only handle so much." No duh.

iPhone 4G (with Apple Bumper), shows 2-3 bars, but hasn't dropped a call yet, nor has it refused to place a call. I'm happy.

We are getting ready to start week 3 of the iPhone 4 release. Nothing from apple about the issue. :(

Mass hysteria. Most ridiculous thread ever. Who cares?. Bourgeois problems, for bourgeois people. It's a phone ffs - noone cares, bar the owners, and they can RETURN THEM.

Huh? Do you mean no statement or no update? There has been a statement (see first post of this thread).

Lol, which do you think? I am referring to the update. The statement is complete horse ****.

This is so typical of Apple.

They operate just like the Feds, deny it & stonewall it.

Yup. They are going to draw it out until most people either forget or ignore it. It's a joke.

cannot recommend

Consumer reports just announced that they "Cannot recommend" the new iphone 4. In their extensive testing they found it performed "much worse" at cell reception when touching the spot than did any other phones.

I smell free bumpers coming, or a recall.

Yeah I read that. That's kind of a big deal.
I wonder how much this affects current/future iP4 sales.

How much of a big deal is it? All Consumer Reports influential enough that this report would make Apple react? (Honest question)

I would love for Apple to get some flack for the lackluster way they've responded to a legitimate flaw.

Maybe it's an iPhone with a make-up :D

Another fabricated video ? ;)

Nope, just another useless post of another phone none of us has exhibiting something none of us can verify. Thanks that's useful.

In the meantime Consumer Reports agrees with me, along with the "antenna expert", Spencer Webb, that the fanbois were initially quoting. Then, there's you and your awesome YouTube finds of random videos...

EPIC FAIL, but keep trying.

Until the software update, that apple claims will fix this, all of this business is really academic. Hardware defects can be fixed with software.

If the software updates doesn't fix it, I will be the first one to demand a recall. But until then, my phone works just fine..

When did Apple make such a claim ? The only software update coming fixes another issue that has been there since iPhone OS 2.0 where the bar display was "fixed" to show more bars and they are now in the process reverting to show less bars.

That is the only update Apple has made claims about in the last few weeks. Do you have any other Apple PR that states otherwise ?
