well no use bashing apple right now, the only thing to do is wait for this update. If it works it works, awesome. If people are still getting dropped calls in places they usually dont with other phones then Apple is SCREWED for lying to the world! lmao

This statement by Apple is not true. I just tested this again while sitting here at my desk at work. If I hold the phone in my right hand or not touch the lower left corner while in my left hand and call my office number, my phone rings. If I hold the iPhone 4 in my left hand, no pressure, just hold it normally and call my office, call doesn’t go through (due to signal). This is the only phone that does this. I don’t see how adjusting my display of “bars” is going to be helpful to me with this issue.

So, as an AT&T customer, what phone should I return this one for and get instead?

There own explanation doesn't make any sense. If the software is making the phone display more bars than it really should, then how does holding the phone in a different way change the software? If bridging the antenna's causes the bars disappear then going by the their own explanation, the phone's reception must be really bad.

Exactly.
Calm down people. Wait for the company to respond with it's fix then judge them again.
Stop jump into conclusions you are not RF engineers, and you also don't dont know to what extent, software interferes with hardware. There might be a chance that when the phone sees a hard drop of signal, to panic and look other nearby towers for better reception. This whole case, will eventually make the whole phone experience a lot better maybe even from all the competitors.
Just give them a chance to fix bugs of the best phone in the world at this moment!

Interesting that the 3G is mentioned as also having these problems. I'm on T-Mobile USA, and have NEVER had an issue with my signal strength before or after iOS4 upgrade. Fact is, I rarely have dropped calls with my 3G ... and none since upgrading.

Not being an engineer, I can only guess that perhaps this whole problem is related to the interaction between the device and the AT&T network.

Too bad we don't have any unlocked IP4's to test on T-Mobile!!

Cheers!!

Ken

Again -

Changing the #s on a speedometer doesn't mean your car is operating any differently.

Changing the indication of how many bars represent the signal you have doesn't change how the phone operates.

This is new paint on an old car.

So, wait until it cannot be returned to see if it can be fixed? Excellent advice.

My biggest regret is selling my 3GS. That phone was perfect compared to my iPhone 4. I have bought a bumper and believe this really helps this issue. A big mistake on the design, no matter what they say about previous iPhones and how it compares. Those cases to conceal phone didn't help either.

With bumper, i can live with it and don't see myself returning it. I love iPhone

The great iphone lie?

So is Apple now saying that they have been lying about their products performance? This just opens another whole can of worms if you ask me.

Read the friggin letter, there is no reason for people to keep bringing this up. There is no fee..

That is coming from Apple.....I just called and they will NOT take the phone back. ATT IS CHARGING A RESTOCKING FEE!!!!

dropped calls and data grinding to a halt

I don't really see how it can just be a misrepresentation of the signal strength if people are reporting dropped calls and data grinding to a halt.

Well the dropped calls and data grinding to a halt is not new to the iPhone 4.
It has been a problem long before iPhone ever was introduced.
People just love something to complain about.
I can say, i have had far fewer dropped calls with my 4 than with my 3G.
I've had for a week and can only count 1, and i use my phone alot!

Apple is now throwing the ball to AT&T as users now will have less bars(dropped calls) and will start blaming AT&T coverage. Exit Strategy!

If you are on t-mobile in the US with an iphone, don't you have to be on edge? Might explain why you don't have dropped calls.

Yes dude, Wait until they fix it!
They said it in bold: NO PROBLEMO with the Antenna. What more can you expect? If you don't trust them for whatever your reasons, just return the thing and move on with your life

Yeah. That correlation makes perfect sense . Unhappy with dropped calls=strict constitutionalism.

More like dumb people who can't follow logic or rationality. That's where the correlation is. Did you even read my original quote? The other member I quoted was spot on, do some research, go find the article and then slap yourself for being a zero.

Retire, Relax, Enjoy Your Family. It Is Just A Phone. Not Worth It.

You can start holding it differently than you're used to and eventually get used to that way. Or you can get a case (lots of cases out there cheaper than Apple's $30 bumper). Or better yet:

"As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund."

Move on. Get an Android, or BB, or Nokia, or whatever...

AHHHH, didn't realize they said "NO PROBLEMO", never mind then my phone works fine.
