I mean... that's literally what the problem is at most large tech companies. Tech debt, mainly legacy code, is a huge issue and it makes sense that Apple is no different.
Yup... but... It's getting worse. And Apple makes more money than everyone in the known universe, in the history of, like, forever. So Apple is very much un-like most large tech companies.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge Apple fan... HUUUGE. Since well before and after my time there. I'm just sayin' ;)

I wrote these in another reply, and it applies here too:
Can you imagine Amazon or Google shutting down to roll out a new product or feature ? That would be totally bananas right ?

At this moment it's now going on 4 hours down. And today's event won't end for about another 3-4 hours, and typically the store comes back online after the event ends. So based on those results, or lack thereof - they are falling backwards.

Yeah, agreed, good modern software would make it easier. Apple is not that good at online and cloud stuff I guess. I hope they get the airtags right, it's a pure cloud service.
Yup. I almost wrote that same thing "Apple is not that good at online and cloud stuff". Cause in the Apple commentary circles - like Gruber, ATP, etc. - that's a common topic. And I've had problems with it too. And a friend of mine had his company acqui-hired by Apple years ago to try to add cloud skills to Apple cause they needed it bad.

I decided not to write that, so I didn't come off as negative on Apple. Cause I'm totally not. Huge fan. HUGE.

I shared this because I hoped it might be a learning opportunity for folks, as it was for me.

That, and also why not a sneak peek at the new iPhones? They don't have to release today, but they could manage our expectations a bit better.
Same. I'm more than aware it will still be weeks before pre-order. Just want the announcement about the features, price, and especially release date, so these wishy washy rumors are done for, and I have a date to count down to.

I agree. The hardware tech was very impressive. And most of the software is very impressive. And the gi-normous scale of what the online store can do and handle it in real time is bananas, and not many companies can do what Apple does with that scale. It's the deployments and engineering automation with the online store that's a problem, that results in this long downtime.
Amazon. Don’t display your fan boy ignorance.

I'll never get this whole 'store goes down' nonsense.
Every other website in the world updates their content on the fly.

Why Apple cant do that is beyond me.
And dont tell me its to 'build excitement'. Gone should be the juvenile days of spazzing out about whatever minor improvements to the watch or ipad or whatever.

No can do, they’d rather have you salivating at the bit like the ravenous dog you are when starved for rumors.

Bull. Amazon, espn, any news site is constantly updating a huge amount of content in teal time.
it would be idiotic if ESPN went down prior to every major sporting event. Why we dont think its asinie when apple does it is beyond me.

I would LOVE a teal iPhone!

Don’t touch if it works. The thing they have is solid and has supported them for years.

yea, dont touch it if it works. Would be so happy had apple applied that to other things ... like magsafe.
And besides, how is having the store down for 4 hours anywhere near a thing that 'works'?!?

Yup, it works - almost always. But... then again, come to think of it, they do touch it - IE. deploy new code and content - several times year. Years ago, we had set a release schedule of 5-6 releases per year and adjusted dates based on product release dates. And from the outside, that still seems to be about the same.

But their downtime is getting worse. Years ago the store was down for 2 or 3 hours. This time they may be down for 7-8 hours, if they wait until the end of the event today to bring it back online. That's going in the wrong direction, and getting ridiculous. So eventually they will have to fix this problem.

So... maybe... not so much. Maybe ?

Let's just leave the store down except for little pop up sales shortly after these events...what do you think? *REALLY* build up demand, eh?

Yup, that's the point I was making in my other replies here. The Apple Online Store has big problems and the downtime is getting worse.

Combo of web site QA, and a flair for being a tease!

So funny, and on point. Anyone who thinks having an online store down for several hours just so a company can update a couple product lines is living in some kind of apple cone of distortion beyond all logic.
I mentioned ESPN earlier. I've been going to espn.com since the late 90's and even back then they were updating tons of scores and articles in real time. Simply inexcusable apple cant manage it more than two decades later.
