We had to sign two-year contracts with the original iPhone also. AT&T could easily require a credit card for new accounts and simply charge existing subscribers on their accounts if the phone wasn't activated within a certain time frame.

You didn't have to sign a two year contract to purchase the phone...only if you activated it with ATT.

And next month the page will look like this :

Obviously clearing inventory here (understandable), and I know there are millions of us out there - but you'd have to be a moron to buy an iPhone 3G right now. Right?
Or, do I take for granted how many people don't spend every day in these forums? :D

It will be interesting to see if this is policy carries over to future gen iPhone transactions. I suppose we'll know a lot more in a month.

Hopefully this is a prelude to being able to order the next version of the iPhone online instead of having to endure registration at an Apple store.

:apple:

Time to see what O2 is doing about these darn handsets. What'st the time difference between ENgadget date stamp and your time zone ? Should show if you got before Endgadget and the front page of Macrumors

Hopefully we still see this in June post-new iPhone so I can order the thing while I study for my board exam. :D

Have to be a moron ? or RISKTAKER.

The people who bought an iphone 1st gen JUST before the 3G release got a cheap iphone then got the subsidized price for the 3G without much of a contract length increase. Then they were able to sell their 1st gen for quite a bit of cash.

Question is, will this process work this time round or not.

From what I was told they just exchanged their phones with the new ones...They had already signed up for a two year contract anyways.

It was a loss for them because they paid what $400 for a 16 gig 1st gen phone?

Wanna know how to clear inventory?

Sell the damn thing without the ATT contract lock in! J

It's only the PAYG iPhone, it's been in the UK store for a few months.

Is the data portion PAYG as well? I'd be so for PAYG with AT&T since I only use about 40 to 50% of my minutes each month. That being on the lowest plan available.

This is for the current stuff, and prob beta test for the 3rd Gen stuff. After the getting started page also shows for existing customers

That is awesome

Hopefully they carry this on to the 3rd generation iPhone. Who knows, maybe this is in preparation for the next generation.

I just order the white 16GB model today and it says it ships May 26, it says its custom configured -- why is this? I'm sure they have stock piles of this model...

just out of curiosity, why would you order one now knowing that in less than a month there is a good chance a newer one will be out? and when it does, the excess inventory of current gen iPhones will probably see some price reduction if the new one comes in anywhere near the same price as the current gen.

if we're lucky it'll be even cheaper due to manufacturing cost reductions or greater subsidies. then you really would have paid too much for that weeks old iPhone.

not knocking you down or trying to criticize, just curious is all

When I bought my wife's refurbed 3G iPhone I got it in the mail and had to activate the number switch through AT&T first online and then plugged it into iTunes for the rest of the activation. Better than when the 3G first came out but still not clearly as perfect as the original iPhone's activation.

Let's hope with the next update to the iPhone Apple and AT&T go back to the original purchase and activation policy.

AT&T and Apple's sales policy for the iPhone 3G was a step backwards.

Let me buy online on launch day and activate from home if I want to! I don't want AT&T and Apple Store reps opening my box or trying to up-sell me accessories and plan changes. Let us get in and get out or flat out buy online.

You can thank the people who unlocked their first-gen phones for that.

I know. However, AT&T and Apple can require a credit card as collateral for new customers and charge a penalty to existing customers accounts if the iPhone is not activated within a certain period of time.

Hell. Most people didn't get to activate in-store on the iPhone 3G's launch day anyway due to activation server outages.

The 3G launch was a mess compared to the original launch.

very true... i waited all night.. got my phone like 14th in line.. didnt work til 6 at night
