IIRC, I bought my iPhone XS MAX last year (256GB) for $1249. That’s huge depreciation for that phone in 1 year. Current resale value should be closer to $800 or so, no?

It doesn’t specify which storage option is $600. What if it’s a 64GB?

Apple US quotes the same price for iPhones regardless of storage. I've checked France and the UK and there it depends on storage.

I'm a bit sad too, they're only quoting $370 for my $749 XR.

Theyre offering $550 for all storage options. Im not seeing $600 when you go to the actual quote halfway down the page to select device.

The flash chip for 256gb over 64gb is a few dollars more part value; despite charging $150 more. So they arent going to give you $75 more than a 64gb back.

If you want more sell it privately but take the risk associated. That is why going monthly is the best if you plan to upgrade yearly, you pay exactly half and give it back no selling hassle.

I paid $800 for mine about 4 months ago on Swappa. There's a convenience fee built in there for sure, but that's just part of offering phones.

Then good for you. 600 is a great deal.

It's not a great quote, but it's hassle-free - OP would probably get another $150 for going through the trouble of dodging scammers on eBay and Craigslist.

In my case $370 is indeed a great quote - a brand new XR is now $599. I don't think anyone would pay me $450 if they can get a brand new one for $150 more.

I got $600 for a Max when I went through their pricing page.

Got it when you select buy the 11 Pro it says $600. The other way says $550 for some reason.

I may do that then. I will owe $595 to ATT (half plus the current $45.70 monthly payment, which I have to make regardless to upgrade to pay off 1/2 the price) so I can make $50 paying off ATT and sending it in to Apple instead. Not a bad profit since I have to mail it to someone anyway.

Current resale is around $800...for private party sale.

Trade in always nets the seller a bit less. Just like trading in a car instead of selling it private party.

The real sweet spot if "value" is the consideration is always buying a barely year old (if that) last years model and let someone else eat the 40-50% depreciation.

Lose $100-200 or lose it all potentially to a scam; phone or car. Its a decision to make how much risk one is willing to take on as losing it all is possible.

I initially thought that the math would work the same way for me on the IUP ($600 vs $550), but realized that if I get to 12 payments and "trade it in" on the IUP I don't have to pay the other half of the loan.

Well correct, you would pay the $20 and change per month for a year and then own the phone as you are paying in the balance on the current phone (1/2 basically if you own the same capacity small/large device that you plan to upgrade to).

But it is $50 off. Im undecided if I'll do that or not. Just a thought.

it cost them $450 to make it but you paid $1250. The fact that Apple ripped you off by so much is why they are only willing to give you $600. Your phone didn’t depreciate 50% in one year, you just paid 280% markup when you bought it.

When the cost to upgrade w trade-in was say $20 a month, it wasn’t too bad.
Now to pay $50-55 a month to have the latest camera. Yes I say camera because there really isn’t much difference between the previous versions. How many of us are doing AR, playing hard core video games on these phones?

Here is my take, once it got to the $1000 price range, have to ask yourself, how often do you upgrade your laptop for the newest one? I can assure you, not every two years.

I’m keeping my X for another year at least. Want Qualcomm and 5G option if indeed its mainstream.
