I just need one on occasion to plug in my phone or to transfer from my portable hard drive. I appreciate the help but I wasn't looking for a charger...just a converter. Thanks though!

The converter you posted is suitable for charging, but not necessarily for transferring data. You would want a USB-C 3.1 cable like the one I posted above.

I'm confused. I can't plug in an ordinary flash drive into either of those?

Those are slow. A USB-C 3.1 cable will be at least 2x faster at 10 Gbps data transfer rate.

If you just want something cheap and slow, you can get a 2-pack from amazon for $7.00 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EL4PVFE

Well yea, I've seen that. But I've read the reviews and it makes me hesitant when people say that it doesn't work on 2018 MBP, you have to jam it in, it shorts the wifi, etc. I'm usually one all for shortcuts, but being that this is a new computer, for once I think I'll even shock myself and go for the name brand.

Just keep in mind Anker & Belkin USB-C 3.1 to USB cables range from $19 - $29 and are 2X faster than the two you asked about.

I believe the OP is talking about a USB-C to Micro-B cable for the portable HDD and a USB-C to Micro USB cable for the phone. I've used this manufacturer CableCreation and they are good quality cables. I've had no issues with them.
