Hey Peoples, we know this doesn't mean that Apple wins/Microsoft loses, but after all the years of being looked down on as redundant/niche/arty farty types, etc. etc. I't rather nice for once to bask in the glow of what is actually quite a brilliant return from the (nearly) dead!

Let's just enjoy the moment, and look forward to what the future may bring.

They may question how Apple is making its money. Back when gas was $4.00/gallon lots of folks were not cheering Exxon being $100 billion higher than where Apple is now either.

That's not a good analogy. Exxon mobile does shady things, especially when it comes to dealing with oil. Apple is legitimately selling a product that people want to buy, simple as that.

Actually, it is a decent analogy. Apple DOES do plenty of "shady things." Their prices, combined with lack of product quality (I've owned mac pros, iMacs, macbook Pros, Mac Mini's and iPads...only the iPad hasn't had major problems strangely enough) are absurd.

Two Things:
1) People that used Windows or general PCs treated Mac users like second class citizens. Saying how Apple was going out of business and you would have to throw away your investment in time and resources with Apple products and relearn everything over again. Going to Windows would be a step backward. People will never forget that.

2) It is nice to see an underdog company or person achieve something close difficult or impossible. Sort of like watching a Rocky movie or watching the Rebels destroy the powerful Death Star for the first time on the big screen, or a single Federation Starship defeating the Borg. It is purely an entertainment value.

1) If this holds any truth at all, that was in 1999. And you know it. (Talk about whining ;)).

2) An UNDERDOG company? Apple are like Rolex, very adept in cultivating a certain public image. Apple stopped being an 'underdog' company a long time ago. That underdog image has worn off by know. And you know that too.

Why not? That's been Microsoft's motto since day one. One can only sit back and allow it but for so long. Have you not checked out how amazing Office 2008 for Mac is? Oh wait, it's not, but the Windows version is amazing and includes VB for the same price as the Mac version. Have you checked out One Note for Mac, oh wait, that's only on Windows. How about MS Access, Publisher or Visio? They're not on Mac either but the suite cost the same on Mac and Windows. Let's not talk about how awesome Messenger is on Mac. :D

I can give you 2 quotes to reply to your question :D

If I were running Apple, I would milk the Macintosh for all it’s worth–and get busy on the next great thing. The PC wars are over. Done. Microsoft won a long time ago.”

–Steve Jobs, 1996

To create a new standard, it takes something that’s not just a little bit different, it takes something that’s really new and really captures people’s imagination and the Macintosh, of all the machines I’ve ever seen, is the only one that meets that standard.”

–Microsoft founder Bill Gates, 1984

Gotdamn!! I'll be dipped in **** and rolled in breadcrumbs

Me too! I really never thought I'd live to see this happen.

I'm not sure Steve Ballmer is still laughing and confident about his phone strategy in the face if Apple's over-priced keyboard-less iPhone. BING!

That's ridiculous, are you suggesting that they purposely screw the products up so the customer buys a defective machine, so their experience is ruined? What good would that do, that only produces more defective returns and exchanges for Apple. :p

The best move Apple ever made was buy* NeXT. They've come a long way from when they needed a $150M cash infusion from MSFT.

*Apple "bought" NeXT, but the result was more like NeXT bought Apple :D

So who's got the last laugh now, Winblows droids? Have you got enough crow? I have been saying this for a LONG time, that Apple would surpass MS SOONER than later!

So now is the perfect occasion for all MS fanboys to stop infesting this forum and spreading their FUD.

MS IS DEAD. AND SO IS GOOGLE.

Sent from my wonderful iPad!

P.s.: Tks for the news, Apple; today is my B-day..! ;)

Once again, you post the exact same "MS is dead" and "Google is dead" comments that you post in 100% of all your other posts over the past 5 years. Funny how neither MS nor Google is dead yet...not even close.

Although I applaud Apple for having the 2nd largest market cap, the fact remains that MS and Apple really haven't been competing against each other for the last 15+ years...until a few years ago, Apple was a computer company and attempted to compete against MS in the computer space from the 80s till the early 2000s...Apple clearly lost and is still barely holding onto 7% of personal computer market share...while MS holds about 90% personal (and business) computer market share.

Apple, since 2001, has transformed itself into a electronics company more in tune with the Sony's of the world...not Microsoft or Dell or Oracle or IBM or any other "computer" industry. Yes, Apple still sells personal computers, but again, review my point about Apple's computer marketshare.

Again, congrats to Apple. But for all you people who really think there is some kind of "war" between Apple and MS, you're stuck in 1994.

Apple could care less about Microsoft

It’s nice to see Apple’s cap increasing but most of you are really out of touch and stuck in the past. Microsoft whether you love or hate them, aren’t the bad guys. In fact, they are some of the good guys. *They sell a series of products and if one chooses, he/she can buy that product if they feel it’s a good fit. Apple is in a similar category. I love my iPhone and I love Microsoft Office. Good or bad they adhere to some basic rules where innovation is rewarded. Google on the other hand dominates search and gives things like Android away for free. I like Android, I just hate how they give it away. How do companies like Microsoft and Apple compete with that down the road? Some of us will pay extra for an IPhone, iPad or HP Slate running Web OS but most people are going to buy device hardware powered by Chrome or Android due to the lower overall cost and massive market share and apps (Android is catching up to the App store fast). Say goodbye to innovation when that does happen. I hope Microsoft’s recent reorganization helps them get serious about mobile. I also hope Apple’s advertising platform can compete with Google. Google is keeping everybody awake at night.

I've had a few problems with Apple hardware too, but in my experience, Apple's service is responsive and very satisfactory. The Applecare team is a dream to work with.

5 years ago my iBook G4's logic board fried within 2 months. Apple backed up my data and fixed it free in 3 days.

My Timecapsule's drive went nuts also within 2 months. Apple backed up my data and replaced it free also in 3 days.

Too many people treat this as a zero-sum game - in order for Apple to win, Microsoft/Google/whoever have to lose. I don't understand this simpleton's way of thinking. With that said, congratulations to Apple.

That's strictly the point of view from a fire-and-forget investor, not one who periodically reevaluates the potential upside of his/her holdings.

Five years ago, some people thought then as you do now ("Apple is showing a very good future...") and moved some money out of MSFT and into AAPL.

MSFT had an long run of superb performance (the Gates years) followed by mediocre (the Ballmer years). Over the past five years, MSFT has basically tracked the S&P 500 whereas AAPL is +450%.

Basically, you're way late to the party.

Steve Ballmer has no vision. He was a great hatchet man for Gates, but MSFT has suffered under Ballmer's reins. Microsoft needs new leadership.

One is a growth stock and the other a value stock.

There will always be another investment that will make you more money, even if its apple stock you're talking about, regardless of what time frame.

i agree. Google is the bad guy.

not the bad guy

Google is not the bad guy. Google is the competitor. And so is Microsoft. MS is no longer the bad guy.

There is a very big difference between where Google is now and where Microsoft was then. Google is going head to head with Apple and other companies with products and services.

Microsoft then was manipulating and dominating markets through illegal tactics and corporate treachery. And it was a different world. Today, mindshare is as important, if not more important, than market share.

It used to be Microsoft had mindshare locked. Now, it's at least a 3 way race.
