Apple does it with lower volume, greater margins

Apple isn't going to be the next Microsoft as they aren't trying to control the Computer Market and flood the industry with Apple only.

That's Google.

Apple is mocked for some of the highest margins in every market they have penetrated. None of those markets are they dominating in total units sold.

They have found their sweet spot in price/unit and more power to them.

Apple is now a bigger company than the almighty Microsoft it terms of market capitalization (i.e. where the money is), but yet they're not "significant enough" of a market player to qualify for antitrust legislation under the market "tying" provisions of the Clayton Antitrust Act regarding their 100% control of hardware for OSX? How very VERY odd.

I guess the old saying that if you say something long enough (in this case that Apple is a tiny player in the industry) people will believe it even long after they are the 2nd largest U.S. company (in money terms) in the world....

well...dear apple, good stats...what about to share the success with the folks who spends a **** load of money to buy macbook pros etc.? this whole **** is too expensive

And now they are working away at Windows Mobile 7......

Why?

Apple people want iPhones.

People who like the style but with more openness go for Android, both have growing marketplaces, and only a matter of time before Android get's so much momentum it will be unstoppable.

Who are they making Windows mobile 7 for?

Why do they waste their time on things like this rather than innovate new products?

Obviously, you two never speak to Windoze IT guys. I've been a Mac fan at least since 1985. And the rhetoric has NEVER changed in 25 years. I heard it in 2010 when the iPad was announced.

The IT zealots are insane, it's nice to prove them so.

Nobody cares about your fights in the basement of ______ (company).

We're talking about the real world here. What they compete in, how they do it and what it means.

You must be really proud of your one share in the company, because every time I see someone bragging about it, it's you.
More than one share. I won't say exactly how much, but my current AAPL holdings dollar value is in five figures. Play large or go home.

I'm just trying to point out that if you're really a fan of a company, you should buy stock, especially of this one.

The ROI on Apple has been enormous. When I eventually cash out (assuming I do it when it hasn't crashed below $100), my AAPL gains will pay for every Apple product I've purchased during the time I owned the stock. Basically, Apple is paying me a dividend in the form of products (plus some cash to boot).

It's not to late to buy AAPL. It's trading at $244 right now. Brian Marshall at BroadPoint has a one-year target price of $350. What other investments do you think will return 43% increase?

When you are a shareholder of a company, you will view things slightly differently than a fanboy.

Guess you've never seen or played with a WP 7 demo device.
Very slick.
The Samsung demo unit I had the opportunity to try out for a bit was very nice.
Impressed me enough to hold off on any new phone purchases until I've had a chance to see the released version.

As to your question of why?
People like choice.

I believe the same thing was said about Android a couple of years ago.
Android seems to be kicking some major butt lately.

Nice forum handle.

The primary responsibility of Apple (or any other publicly traded company) is to increase shareholder value. Never, ever forget that.

Apple People?? I don't think so. There are many "PC People" that buy iPhones that wouldn't think twice even putting their fingers on a Mac keyboard or anything else Apple makes.

As for who qualifies to want an Android, you know this fact how?

If you step away from your geek way of thinking, the average customer doesn't walk into a cell phone store and say, "I want to buy an Android because it has more "openness". The majority of cell phone customers don't know one from the other, they tend to buy what's popular.

Been a user for 20+ years, been a share holder for 10+ years ;).

Hope they continue try to be the best and don't try to be the biggest.

Attention *LTD*. I found a new avatar for you. :D

congrats apple! best save that $$, when jobs croaks, i'll be dumping my shares like a pimp dumps his ho's. :D

Android? Everyone I know that's not a geek wants an iPhone for the apps. They like the awesome GUI and build quality of an Apple device. People don't care about "openness" especially when you are opened up to to 150K or so less apps than the app store. It's also easier to jailbreak iPhones than it is to root Android devices. All iPhones and iPod touches can be jailbroken with pretty much the same software. Rooting an Android device is different for EVERY single one. CyanogenMod for instance doesn't work on all devices only N1, HTC Dream/Magic, etc.

People want to listen to music. It's so (insert word here) difficult to organize music onto Android devices than with iPhones/iPod touches and iTunes. I can go on and on, but usability-wise, the iPhone wins hands down. It may not have the best camera, processor, etc. on the market but the software is much easier to understand and use.

CONGRATULATIONS APPLE!

I'm just trying to point out that if you're really a fan of a company, you should buy stock, especially of this one.

Probably the worst investment advice ever printed.

Better advice is "if you think a company's stock price is going to way outperform the market - buy it, even if you hate the company and its products".

The combination of events has quickly closed the gap between the two companies, and today Apple finally surpassed Microsoft in market capitalization for the first time

Correction: It is not the first time Apple has been ahead of Microsoft in market cap. If you go back to the 1980s, Apple was a significantly larger company than Microsoft.

On December 5th, 1986, for example, Apple's market cap was $2.74B vs MSFT's $1.25B

Look, I have no idea what this really means, and I don't really care.

But, what I love about it, what so many of us love about it, is that it upsets the MSanthropes that love to troll here. LOVE IT. Now take your PCs and your luxurious spare time and go blog something pointless about how you suck.

This actually means that Apple's stock price is more scrutinized from now on.
I don't see how it could get more scrutinized at all. Very few people say anything good about it even when everything points to the price going up.
