Umm. Why is the iPhone running Windows? Look at the close/maximize/minimize buttons. I mean, obviously this doesn't mean the iPhone will ever run Windows, but why the heck do they depict it with clearly Windows-inspired buttons?

Oh, and as a bonus, the scrollbars are Windows-y too.

Did you try reading the text too? It seems to be a press release on the iPhone 3G... when was the picture drawn / the pattent filed?

It is nice to see that Apple is continuing to look into new innovations. Touch Screen controls, accelerometers, and cameras are all old technology. Apple is, however, finding new and innovative ways to use these technologies to provide a truly organic way to interact with our computers.

I expect imitation examples for these features to pop up on competitive phones soon. :p

Sony Ericsson already manufactured a phone that uses this kind of technology (the W380a, announced in November of 2007):

"Gesture control

Let your hands call the shots. Simply move your hand above the W380a to mute an incoming call or put the alarm clock on snooze. Enjoy the magic of gesture control - control your W380a without touching it. "

No doubt SE filed a patent for this kind of thing long before Apple did. But I'm no patent lawyer, so who knows if two patents like this could co-exist.

A touch sensitive casing will really complicate the protective case market... i wonder if it will be sensitive enough to sense motion through an incase slider, for example.

So as long as you do not sell to fat people, you are not breaking the patent? Right?

Is it just me, or are the drawings for Apple's patent applications rubbish. Look at the guy's hand in the first picture. A bad case of Elephantitis if there ever was!

To me, it looks more like the old OS 9 interface. It seems like in its patent illustrations, Apple always uses that look. I've never understood why.

So how would you describe the hand in this patent illustration?

Next-Gen to run multiple apps in background?

Hmmm...:)

This is stupid.

If you are right handed, this method is completely unnatural and awkward when the phone is to your ear. Try it.....now see how it works. It doesn't.

Even if the phone is in your hand and you're surfing the web, it still puts your hand in a severly awkward position.

Stop with the gimmicks apple....put in functionality and utility.

iPhone 3G / 3GS is better than 2G for lens protection

The glass protecting the lens isn't recessed in the slightest. It's perfectly level with the back of the iPhone. And it scratches pretty easy. My original iPhone was useless as a camera after I scratched it.

Same here, my 2G lens became useless after 9 months, but my 3GS lens is still pretty good now... the 3G and 3GS' curved backs make it so you can slide/spin your iPhone on a table without having the camera lends touching the surface... I'm sure that's where most of the scratches occured.

does no one see a front camera but me?

I most certainly see front facing camera there. Expect it to be in next gen iphone. :)

...but the patent is showing a finger across the camera on the back of the phone.

No, there is no front facing camera. That circle is dotted, representing what you can not see from the front angle (the camera on the back and the rest of the finger). Sorry :)

why is the iphone running windows

so they can't argue that patent limited to iphone os when someone copies it

There is NO front facing camera...

Look at the picture that some are confusing to depict a front facing camera. Both the finger and the camera are drawn in the patent with ( ----- ) lines

This alludes to both the finger and camera in the rear of the iPhone.
