Ah yes, the motorcycle, automobile, airplane, and bullet train - a perfectly direct comparison to the Universal iPod Dock! I never knew that it had an internal combustion engine though! How are those doing in the new fully electric cars by the way?
That was the most blown out of proportion post I've ever read. 🙂 (You could if you wanted though.)
This is a freaking dock. Don't add a rubber top just to make it more expensive than it already is. If people think that's advancing, then let them buy it. I see this as 'just another thing to make just because'...
But you see, that's exactly the problem--if what you have now is merely "Good Enough," then technology will never move forward, whether it's got an engine or is a semiconductor device. (By the way, the old
Iron Horse was an
External Combustion Engine.) If you really want me to relate this electronically, then let's try this series:
"Who needs AC? It's dangerous and will kill people!"
Thomas Alva Edison
"Who needs transistors, vacuum tubes are fine."
paraphrased
"We can't fit that big calculating machine in this Mercury capsule. Build it smaller and lighter!"
NASA, trying to reduce the weight of the first manned space capsule (paraphrased)
"Who needs more memory? 640K is enough for anybody!"
Bill Gates
"If I were in charge of Apple, I would shut down the company and pay off all the investors!"
Michael Dell
Need I go on? Just because you can't see a use for something, doesn't mean a use doesn't exist. The article clearly pointed out that this was going to be more than just a 'rubber coated' dock--it was reported that this would be a self-adjusting universal dock for any device using the iPod 30-pin dock connector, allowing it to work with almost any existing iPod or newer--perhaps larger--devices.
Personally, one of my biggest complaints was that I needed to constantly change the adaptor to use my iPhone, iPod Classic or iPod Nano in the dock I have attached to my computer. If the rumored tablet device becomes a reality, the current dock I use becomes instantly unusable for the device, forcing me to either attach two different docks (four if I decided to provide a dedicated dock for each device) or get a self-morphing dock that will accept and properly support whatever is mounted.
