I could be wrong... but wasn't there another patent like a year ago where Apple was looking to use 3 camera's and do image interpolation to create a better quality image but dedicating each camera to R, G, or B? The net result was suppose to be less motion blur and sharper images.

I could be confused with another patent application, but I'm pretty sure it was Apple. Maybe this has something to do with that?

Self Moderated Update:
DUH! I guess I should read and not scan the article... they talk about the patent I was thinking of in the article. Just ignore me today... it's Friday!

If they don't bring this out for iOS 5 I think I'll scream!! ;)

I would've thought it made perfect sense for both families and enterprise...

Relax, no need to scream.

It will come out in white and VERIZON will have it!

3D photos are interesting just for the fact it shows Apple is/has been thinking about making 3D displays for their products. An iPhone with a 3D screen could be very cool for any number of applications and games.

I think it would look a bit strange. If you see things in 3D and need to touch the things, you just touch the air.

See this would be awesome and all but allot of these patents never make it, and today is April fools day so that means a 80% chance these won't happen soon or at all.

Maybe someone other than Apple already patented "multiple logins - but on a tablet" and refuse to let Apple license it. ;)

For me its the opposite ... I think a 3D camera could be fun (but if I have the choice, I would rather have a higher quality one that is more comparable to compact cameras) ... Spaces seems to me pointless - with the new four finger gestures enabled on the iPad I can easily switch between apps (through the task bar at bottom and directly between them) and I would not know what advantage spaces would have since apps are always fullscreen.

I think you're making assumptions on the Spaces thing; yes, it may be aimed at a tablet, but what if it's a Lion tablet, not an iOS one? There's very little information about exactly where this will be used except for the sketch which appears to be an iPad. If you combine this with some of their older patent applications, this could be forecasting a new iMac that can be used in vertical or 'laid down' orientation with built-in rotation like some of the older CRT displays.

As for the 3D, the jury's still out on that one--at least in this court.

After playing with a Nintendo 3DS. I'd love to see this tech in all my portable devices.

Come on, Apple!

Spaces on the iPad... kinda like how Android has different "desktops", with different widgets on them?

3d photos... like the 3DS?

Good luck patenting these "new" ideas Apple ;)

1. A 3D Camera and display would make this thing an invaluable tool to any designer or engineer.

It's easy to imagine apps for field measuring, scanning into part modelers, etc... simply as a means of in-field communications, it would vastly decrease the mountain of work it takes to convey such information... the overall effect being, enabling all of us to get a LOT more done quicker and with less work, speeding up the development of products in any industry. But a 3D camera is not the same as a Holographic camera. You may get a little more than some depth dimensions, but unless you're wirelessly syncing the shot between two ipads far apart, you're not going to see behind anything beyond a few feet in front of the device.

But for the you know, tiny, insignificant AEC industries, it would be absolutely revolutionary.

Think outside your limited sphere of perception, kiddiess.

2. This must be an older patent for Spaces. The new multitouch gestures accomplish this with a side-swipe ...though a picture-in-picture for uninterrupted video playback while multitasking would be really sweet.

3. Multi-User Login should be easy. Creating a new login might add an additional swipe to unlock bar with each users name on it on the home screen.
...but how they'd keep different users files separate though, with iOS's file system in mind, I can't imagine.

LOL all that trash talking the EVO 4G 3D talking about it's crap and not needed. Now look at people on here.

Wow, cool macrumors.

I posted a thread suggesting the addition of more cameras for that exact purpose a couple months back and it got moved to the wasteland section and eventually locked for no reason:

Looks like I'm just a little bit more intuitive when it comes to seeing into the future than your creative minds can handle.

Take one, leave one...

I would love spaces on iPad for school and multi-tasking! I think this is a logical step for Apple to take with iOS. The dual core processing power could handle this. It will require some other major updates to the UI, however. This could explain the delays in iOS 5!!

3D images, however, I have no use for that.

Meh... Its just a good april fools article, no need to get defensive;)

iDisk, why do you keep repeating the same thing instead of just reading what the guy said? This is a legitimate patent... I first read about it several days ago and I highly doubt that Apple, McRumors and the US Patent Office are in on an April fools joke that broke in March.

Nobody is getting defensive... just curious as to why you keep repeating the same incorrect information that this is an April fools joke. 2 seconds of research will tell you that it's not

IF this is true about 3D, Apple can Officially Claim Toy Status.

This report is all over the web, so I doubt it's an April fools joke.

I want a plastic 3D iPhone to make fun of :D

A patent is not a product. A patent is not a product. A patent is not a product. Everybody needs to keep repeating this... A patent is not a product. A patent is not a product.

This patent has nothing... zero... zip... nada... to do with the iPhone 5 and I'm unsure why people are attributing it to the iPhone 5.

Apple would be idiotic not to patent their R&D. I can say the same if Apple put 3D into a phone in 2011. Apple is never first to market with a gimmick unless the gimmick is clearly a future direction the world is moving. 3D phones have not proven that yet.

iOS 5 will display a black screen and play music. This will allow you to better use the iPad 2 as a frisbee. ;) It's due out next month.

Spaces for the Ipad I can see being a better solution to multitasking now that they have to compete against Honeycomb's implementation. They're still going to need a revamped notification system and ******** widgets already.

Seriously, it's been 4 years and they can't add even a weather widget to the home or lock screen? That's sad. And the notification system is beyond simplistic. It's like something out of 2002 era cell phones. Notifications on the task bar and even basic widgets is something IOS should have had a long, long time ago.

Never going to happen. Apple could have revamped their notifications a long time ago, I think what you see is what you will get
