Just go to the patents:

Late 2021-2022

These patents that focus on the stylus will do well for the next generation and protect against some patent liability as Apple has patented all the interactions for it's implementations.

And there I was using the eyedropper tool for the last twenty five years, feel so stupid now...
1/. Pantone make a a scanning device for just this purpose and have done since wayback that is extremely accurate
2/. There is an Adobe iOS app that can produce a colour swatch from a photo you take on your phone or iPad
3/. Every graphics app has an eyedropper tool, even the native apple colour picker has an eyedropper tool, just what technological problem is this supposed to be solving ?

This is something to be excited about! Too bad there will be a subscription called Apple Colour, not to mention Apple Colour+ for the Pantone colours double the price!

As a teacher that uses my iPad Pro for basic graphic design, I would love this. There are other ways to match real world colors, but this would make it much easier. Love the Apple Pencil 2, btw...It's been entirely worth the cost for my use case (notes, scribbles, meme-making, and basic graphic design).

Just take a photo with your camera and use an app with a color sampler. Voilá, Apple Pencil 3.

Actually saw this story elsewhere yesterday by someone on social media who was hunting for likes.
Ah, so you saw it yesterday AND read it today. Yet still missed the part where this is in addition to the patents filed a couple of years back? 😂😂

Actually it was a predicable addition so no surprise to me. Already imagined the addition when I saw the first patent. I think quite a few people chimed in the first thread with ideas of their own.

Cool! Now, if only Apple would make the Apple Pencil work with the iPhone…

There have been several products released in the last decade that had this functionality. For example: https://www.nixsensor.com/nix-mini/
Yeah... Now put that massive device in a tip of Pencil. That's kind of bonkers. I have no idea how that would be possible, but that ability could be a game changer for designers. Pencil 2 + iPad min 6 have been so eye-opening for me. Within hours, they completely revamped my creative workflow. I've never been more interested in Pencil and iPad evolution.

I was looking at that about a month ago. I came to the conclusion that they make a $899 one for a reason.
