Having issue with Apply Pay acting flaky on my 7 Plus.

I go to the same place to eat lunch almost every day, and also do grocery shopping there, and use Apply Pay all the time there. When I had my 6s Plus, never had an issue with Apply Pay. It worked the first time, every time.

Now with my 7 Plus, Apple Pay only works like half the time. Tonight again I was getting some groceries after work and went to pay with it. I put the phone up to the terminal, the screen lights up with my card, I use my finger, and it starts to work, then the phone tells me to put the phone closer to the terminal, or something like that.

I locked the screen, and tried it again, but Apple Pay wouldn't even come back up the second time, so I had to use my card.

I don't think I have a faulty NFC chip in the phone being as it works sometimes. I wonder if it's just one of the "New Phone" bugs that haven't been worked out in iOS yet.

Anyone else noticing anything weird with Apply Pay?

Do you normally check out at the same terminal?

No I don't. Maybe it might be a flaky terminal then.

I would think if there was a problem with my phone then Apply Pay wouldn't come up at all. Tonight it came up, so the phone recognized that it was next to a payment terminal, it just wouldn't complete the transaction.

I'll see what happens when I go to lunch tomorrow.

Hm, I'll keep an eye on this, I've had issues a couple of times with mine but I assumed it's because I'm coming from a smaller phone and wasn't holding it right.

Well I tried it again today and am still getting the error of "Hold up to terminal to Pay". Or something like that.

I'm going to do a DFU restore tonight. I also have a Genius Bar appointment for Thursday.

If the DFU restore doesn't work, I'm going to get the phone swapped out.

Today is my 14th day with the phone. I just hate the thought of getting a refurb for this 2 week old phone. I'm going to politely ask for a new replacement. I can see getting a refurb if it's 6 months old, but not for a 2 week old phone.

Working on the phone tonight. Did a wipe and DFU restore, then restored my backup.

Will try Apply Pay again tomorrow and let you guys know. If still not working, guess I'll be swapping it out on Thursday.

I don't think you need to worry about getting a refurb, if you end up exchanging it. It is so early and stock is so low that there are probably no refurbs, at all, yet.

On the occasions where it didn't work and you tried to re-attempt your Apple Pay transaction, did you try the NFC method or manually calling up the Apple Pay screen on your own?

I just tried the regular NFC method. I closed out and locked the phone and just tried it again as usual. That is the way I always use Apple Pay. I never call it up manually.

I'm gunna try it when I go to lunch today. I'm crossing my fingers that it will work. :) But inside I have the feeling I'm just going to have to swap it out.

Well I tried it at lunch. It wasn't working again. But I kept moving to different positions near the pay terminal and it finally worked. So it seems my NFC chip is working, just not very good. But this is the first time I ever got Apple Pay to work with this 7 plus. And it took a lot of effort to even get it to work this time.

I'm still gunna keep my Genius Bar appointment and get the phone swapped out. Apple Pay should not have this kind of problems.

It also made me wonder if it might be an iOS problem. I dunno if the 10.1 beta would fix it. But I just think it's the phone needs replaced.

it's probably iOS 10. Other than the speed increase, everything else with this release is buggy as hell. Nothing is consistent with iOS 10 or Watch 3.0.

Ok well here's my story today.

I stopped by the Genius bar today to see if they could fit me in a day ahead, and they did.

The genius brought out his tester and we tried Apply Pay and it didn't work. He had me wipe the phone and set it up as new (Which I had tried before), and we set up just apply pay and the darn thing worked! We tried it multiple times and it worked.

I am totally pissed off. I tried it already as a new phone, DFU restored iOS and it wouldn't work for me, and yet it worked there after just setting it up as a new phone. So obviously he wouldn't swap the phone out, but he did put a note in my file if I still continue to have issues. I got home and instead of restoring my backup, I spent an hour resetting up my phone by hand and redownloaded my apps.

So I go to a supermarket tonight and used it, and it wouldn't work at first. It gave the same error of Hold Near terminal to pay. I pulled the phone back and tried again and it worked. But tomorrow I am going to try the regular place I eat lunch and get groceries and see if it works there and some other places as well.

Makes me wonder if it is either a software bug, or maybe my NFC transmitter is a bit weaker than it should. I'm not sure. But after I try it tomorrow and if I still have issues, I'm going to drive right back there and demand a replacement.

One thing that surprises me is that I know there are a ton of people on MacRumors that use Apple Pay, I just would hope that more people would chime in on this thread to give their feedback.

It could be a software issue inherited by previous backup files.
That's why I like to setup as new when buying new devices and when installing new major iOS versions.

When I got the 7+ I did set it up as new. I never restore backups when getting a new phone. I am a believer in starting fresh.

My 6s+ worked every time with Apple Pay. Never had an issue with it. But this 7+ is just weird with Apple Pay. But as I said, I am going to try it tomorrow at a few different places and see how it goes.

Yes. Weird situation for sure.
It wouldn't work at Apple then worked fine after a restore and setup as new.

I guess it's the same as other threads on here of people having various issues that others are not. iOS 8 and 9 were very buggy when they just came out and it might be 10 is the same way. So it might be a software issue.

But I'll let you guys know tomorrow after I try it again at my usual haunts. It was too late tonight to go driving around to test it.

Well I got the phone swapped out yesterday, and I tried Apple Pay at my usual grocery store today and it worked fine on the first try.

So it appears that it was a faulty NFC chip or NFC Antenna. But then again I only used it once today, but I have a feeling that the problem is solved now.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I haven't had any problems using Apple Pay on my iPhone 7 plus at all, I love it since it is even faster than on my old iPhone 6.

I have exactly the same problems with my iPhone7 here in Switzerland. My old iPhone 6 never had problems.
