Sorry to bump an old thread but it seemed more appropriate than starting a new one...

We recently went to Disney World. My debit card started working with Apple Pay just a week or two before. I've been using it fine elsewhere but while we were at Disney it kept popping up a message that says "use passcode" any time I'd go to pay. Seems like it should then pull up the keypad for me to punch in the passcode on my phone but it didn't (at least not automatically). Wasn't sure what to do at that point so I'd get frustrated and just pull out my card. Any ideas? I'm sure it's something simple.

Are you saying your passcode for the phone or like pin number?

Well, it may mean the PIN but it definitely said passcode. Basically I'd hold my phone to the terminal and a box with a thin grey line would come up under the card saying "enter passcode." That's only happened at Disney. I'm looking around to see if I can find a screenshot and can't.

If it wants a PIN it'll say PIN specifically right? I haven't had it ask for a PIN yet but maybe their verbiage is just confusing.

I almost wonder if it was just having trouble reading my fingerprint (maybe because of sweat or something, it was hot) and asked for the passcode instead. It's never happened anywhere else but I suppose that's a possibility. Still though, it didn't provide me with an easy way to access the keypad from the Apple Pay screen, maybe just needed to hit the home button and unlock the phone.

Thats what I was thinking that it was just not reading your fingerprint. What I would try doing is double click your home button to bring up Apple Pay cards. Assuming it didn't already scan your finger it should say "Pay with Touch ID" then put your finger on the sensor. Once it scans correctly it will say "Hold Near Reader to Pay". Once your at this point you can take your finger off and just put it next to the nfc reader and it will perform the transaction. I like doing it this way because you can have the card already prepped and passed finger authentication before you even try the transaction saving you from embarrassment and confusion with the person at the register.

If that doesn't work then it's probably an issue with the card and there terminals. I for one sometimes have issues with my Discover card at certain business and have to use another card via Apple Pay. I don't know why.

When I use apple pay with my debit card at a place that treats it as a real debit card and offers cash back etc. it asks for code - when I use at a place that just treats debit as credit - it doesn't
