Who ever came up with this should be fired.

They definitely backed the wrong horse, but I'm not entirely convinced it was a mistake. Apple Pay was only announced 6 weeks ago, and just went live. This has been in the works for much longer than that. The MCX committee had an "Oh ****" moment when ApplePay was officially announced. Either that or they knew it was coming and were too far along to back out. Since this isn't slated to launch until next year, it's still possible that it gets delayed indefinitely as ApplePay takes off.

On the other side of it, Target also has the Red Debit Card program, which is a dedicated debit card. It does link to your account (we have it linked to a secondary checking account where it can't do as much financial damage if compromised). But you get 5% off when you use it, so at least there is a decent benefit for customers.

It blows my mind to think about the amount of meetings and time spent amongst top executives at a company to come up with this crap.

And these kinds of things happen at all companies, Apple as well. But this is so far off base with the way technology and consumers are heading, that it is just crazy to think it has made it this far.

When it is released, and the folks who made this see how bad it fails, I hope they come to their senses and wonder "what in the hell were we thinking?"

So now we know why Apple is not making NFC API's available to developers..

Obviously CurrentC is somewhat more complicated to use than Apple Pay, but spin does not help us understand the differences and how they will be marketed:

-Apple will promote Apple Pay as simpler to use, and more secure.

-The other merchants will promote CurrentC as working with any smartphone, and providing them with loyalty bonuses.

You must not use Apple Pay. There is no "app" to open. Future more you don't even have to wake or unlock the phone.

Apple could just **** with them to delete the app from the appstore. They can do whatever they want in the appstore. If CurrentC is then only avaible on Android the works on every device thing is gone.

Edit: more funny would it be if google would do the same thing in the playstore to get google wallet back in the game - haha

Starbucks

Ever been to Starbucks?

They have had much success with a Code scanner type Method of Payment.

So, if it works exactly like how it is described now, these merchants can go burn in hell.

For the 3% that they saved, I have to expose myself to all these risks for their benefits?

The likelihood that this is happening is as high as pigs can fly.

Best Buy, Walmart both sucks to begin with, but this is a whole different level.

Is TC a reliable site to quote this information? Any other reviewers or sites confirm this method? I mean if it's true, then this is the dumbest idea from retailers passing on Apple Pay. lol

It's true.

They lost me at direct access to my bank account. I'm not a Walmart shopper anyway. Junk shopping is not my thing.

Are you saying Walmart just sells junk or am I misinterpreting your statement?

On topic: CurrentC trying to avoid credit card transaction fees has nothing to do with me as a consumer. If that's the message they are trying to put out, it's pretty bad. They need to figure out how it benefits the consumer and they may get more adoption. Me personally, giving direct access to my personal financials is a non-starter. Neither this nor NFC (Apple Pay/Google Wallet) hold any interest for me right now anyway. Too soon. I like to let systems mature before dipping my toe. To each his own though.

I hope it works on my Pyongyang Touch

As is common for North Korean leaders, Kim Jong Un imparted his wisdom and advice. According to the BBC, he advised factory workers to “select and produce shapes and colors that users like.”

Kim Jong Un reportedly said the “hand phone” would be convenient for users because of its touch screen and the “high pixels” of its camera function.

Despite Kim Jong Un's reported visit to an iPhone factory, one Japanese blog reported the phone is likely a Chinese imported "Uniscope" phone.

There is so much wrong with this concept.

I really hope people aren't dumb enough to give in and use this tech - regardless of how many retailers are in on it.

Apple pay is golden. It addresses every consumers fear about mobile wallet in a very pleasing way. This competitor crap is all a money making, consumer-screwing scam. Honestly I will avoid ApplePay competitors like the plague.

I mean, imagine if these retailers lost your BANK ACCOUNT - much like they have had their credit card systems hacked.

Lame. If I was Apple and Google I would not allow these apps in the app store's. If these companies don't want to compete on the merits with Apple pay, Apple can just shut their system down entirely by excluding the apps from the app store.

Good idea. Apple and Google would have good reason to not include these apps (security) so it makes sense that they wouldn't/shouldn't allow them on their devices. Regardless of apple pay or google wallet's availability, this system seems really dumb. I suppose it isn't going to make me not shop at the stores, it's just unfortunate that I won't be able to use an NFC payment method there. It will be in the back of my head - and it sounds like others are going to be avoiding these stores. Even if a place like Walmart loses 1 out of 100 customers because of this, that will be a significant income loss. I wonder if they'll realize what they've done...

"Wait, wait, wait, you'll have to excuse my friend, he's a little slow. The town is back that way."

You want my bank information, my drivers licence, my social security number AND I have to open an app, scan some bullsh** with the camera and show it to the guy?

HELL no.

Why don't I just hand over my identity to the Russian Mafia directly and cut out the middle-man?

So let me get this straight. The same stores that have repeatedly been hacked and had data stolen are rolling out a payment option (CurrentC) which wants my bank routing number, account number, Driver's License Number, DOB, SSN, AND they want me to give up any of the protections and loyalty points that my credit cards offer to me, just so the banks/stores can save some money?

And to top it off, they want me to use a separate app to scan a ****ing QR code to check out?

Sure, this'll go far.

Ever been to Starbucks?

They have had much success with a Code scanner type Method of Payment.

Which deducts from an account that you load with Money. It doesn't directly debit from my checking account (I deposit into mine with a Credit Card).

Driver's license + SSN + Checking Account? How will one be able to tell the CurrentC setup procedure from a phishing attempt?
