Haven't seen this discussed here, so I thought I'd post about it.

When Apple Pay was first released, it was pretty hit or miss for me. Often (75% of the time) I'd hold the phone up to the reader, touch ID, and I'd see "hold near reader" on the screen. Sometimes it would get past this, sometimes it wouldn't...I usually ended up having to get out my credit card. And some other times, the cards wouldn't even show on the screen when I'd hold the phone to the reader.

And before you ask, yes, I was holding it near the reader. Either touching it, or within 2cm or so.

Finally out of frustration I went to the Apple genius bar, and explained what was happening. He tested my phone against the demo scanner app they have, and confirmed it wasn't working well. We wiped the phone and set it up as a new phone, and it all appeared to be working ok after that...so, I went home and finished setting up the phone as new.

Over the next couple of days, though, the problem kept coming back. It just wasn't working well.

Another trip to the genius bar, again confirmed it wasn't working well with their demo scanner app, and they replaced the phone. I set that one up as a new phone as well. And since then, it's been working perfectly - not a single issue yet.

TL;DR - if you're seeing a lot of "hold near reader" errors, and you're holding near the reader, then go the apple store and get it fixed/replaced.

Good to know. NFC can malfunction just like any other hardware on the iPhone.

Interesting! I had no idea about this. I will be heading to the Apple Store this weekend to get it taken care of if I'm getting this issue repeatedly.

So refreshing to see someone post about a problem they had who didn't stupidly believe it afflicted all iPhones in existence... :)

Sounds like a faulty nfc antenna. So far I'm 5 out of 5 success.

Just an update - since getting the replacement phone, I've had about 6 transactions go perfectly - touch ID and immediately see "done".

I've had one where I saw "hold near reader" for a second or two, and then it went through and I saw "done". With the old phone, this particular terminal showed "hold near reader" indefinitely (well, at least until I gave up).

Amen. Both of mine work great. I have to admit that I still smile a little bit every time the thing connects. I'm evidently easily amused. :p

I am having the same problem. My wife's phone works perfectly. I've only got mine to work two out of six times. I need to go to the Apple Store.

    Faulty Hardware

I used Apple Chat and was told to "Reset All Settings" and it didn't work.

They said if it didn't work do a complete restore. It didn't work.

Finally, I made it to the Apple Store about an hour away. They swapped the phone.

    It was faulty hardware.

What is good to know it that very few people have had this problem. I did a web search and found only two threads - this one and one at Apple Communities. Both threads were short.

I have now used the phone with Apple Pay at 4 locations. Perfect every time.
