Getting a bit frustrated with Apple Pay on the 12 Pro Max.

Have it set up so Face ID/pin isn’t required when using it for contactless on public transport in London.

Sometimes it works flawlessly but a lot of time it fails and makes me use Face ID or pin (Face ID is difficult with masks)

Results in me holding people up at the barriers. Anyone having similar issues or have any suggestions?

I would suggest you use your Apple Watch instead of the iPhone. I don’t use transit cards but maybe you could even set it as the default so all you’d have to do is double tap the side button and hold your watch to the terminal.
As far as what you are describing, perhaps poor cellular reception is causing the problem you are describing. Just a thought.

I'd agree about the watch, i only recently got mine but with the current need to wear masks in shops its made things so much easier using apple pay. As mentioned just double tap the side button to bring up your cards, choose the one you want if its not the default and then hold your wrist in the vicinity of the reader.

You can also set the express travel card in the same way under Wallet & Apple Pay via settings in the watch app and i assume you can just hold your watch over the reader at the barrier and it works straight away without having to press anything like you do with the phone.
