I successfully paid for stuff at a newly remodeled Target in the California Bay Area using Apple Pay.:cool::apple:

It was in the express checkout area. Selected ‘card’ as my method of payment, I noticed the green lights on the LCD display, tried it, and it worked perfectly.

Hopefully this isn’t just a temporary fluke and is a sign that Target will soon be universally accepting Apple Pay.

Interesting! I was just at Target in Long Beach today and last week. Was on autopilot last week when I tried to use my watch. Didn’t work, but ours hasn’t been remodeled in several years.

I quit trying to use Apple Pay anymore. Sometimes it would work and other time it would not, even at the same place. Chipped debit or credit cards are more dependable. Nothing worst than getting behind someone in line and they can not get Apple Pay to work.

Done with it.

I take pleasure in slowing down the line when trying to use Apple Pay.

I figure either one of two things happens. Either it works and my card payment is done in a fraction of the time of letting the chip reader read my card. Or I slow down the store's line because they can't keep up with the times and accept contact-less payments.

Unless I'm in a big hurry and I know they don't take Apple Pay. But if they claim they take it, even if I've had problems there before, I'm going to keep trying until they get it fixed.

I only use ApplePay when it benefits me. At Target, I don't get any benefits with ApplePay since the RedCard can't be loaded onto ApplePay. I use the physical card and get my 5% discount and I'm out the door.

I do use ApplePay at the Wawa gas station (via AppleWatch). It's linked to a credit card that give me (I think) 3% cash back on gasoline purchase.

I use ApplePay at Chick-Fil-A, Trader Joe's, McD's, and Dunkin using the same credit card and it gives me 1% cash back.

Most everywhere else, if I don't know that ApplePay (or NFC) is accepted, then I just usually use the card. If it's not busy, maybe I'll try using ApplePay, but my iPhone6 is so slow that by the time the Wallet app opens up, I can stick the chip card in the reader.

Thanks for answering the question I had, which was if my RedCard can be loaded into ApplePay. Since it can't, I won't use ApplePay for purchases at Target.

That said, I often pay my Target card right at the register, after purchasing something with my RedCard. For example if I bought a $100 item, which is $95 when using the RedCard, I immediately make a $95 payment to my RedCard, using my debit card--while still at the register. Just my way of not having a RedCard bill, while still getting the 5% discount. But I wonder if I could use ApplePay for making that payment (using the same debit card for payment). Would be ironic lol.

I just double-checked and yes, my RedCard (credit) would not load into ApplePay.

Why would you do that? You're missing out on the 25+ day grace period. You obviously have the money in your bank account, why not hold onto it for another 25 days?

Other than the mental feeling of not owing money, I don't see a purpose. YMMV.

I disagree, there is nothing worse than getting behind someone who busts out the checkbook to make their payment lol

I just use the target app and it automatically gets my coupons and then pays with RedCard all in one.

Because you might spend the money on something else and windup paying interest

Hmmm. Ours is in the midst of a remodel now. I'll have to try it next time I'm there. I would not put it past Target to very quietly roll this out, but only after they have a hit internal targets for Red Card enrollment.

You are my hero. (And for those who can’t tell, no, I’m not being sarcastic. Without this kind of insistence, contactless payments won’t advance.)

I use Apple Pay wherever I can. Twice over the last few years my card was compromised by hacked readers; impossible with Apple Pay.

I never have a problem with it... I don’t know what people are doing when it supposedly flakes out on them. For places that take it, it works nearly instantly, every time.

Target was the one of the last major retailers I shop at that wasn’t accepting it. Now, with the exception of Home Depot, I probably don’t even need my wallet to leave the house (even the rinky-dink sole-proprietor owned pet store I get my dog kibble at takes Apple Pay).

In the UK if contactless works in any form you can use ApplePay and although I don't know for sure about the USA a store or payment network they use would have to explicitly block it for it not to work..?

Anyway, my campaign is always, when I see the ApplePay logo for £30 or less is to point out that they shouldn't be saying they support ApplePay unless they drop the limit since it's clearly superior to having to plug a card in and then hide a pin that you have to type.

I think in the UK about 30% of stores that accept contactless actually do ApplePay properly now and the rest you have a £30 cap.

Target has a debit card option that saves 5% which is debited from your checking account automatically. So no need to get a target credit card.

Thats too bad. I've never had it fail since it launched.

Thanks for tip. Reminds me of the time when I was shocked it worked at Costco. Turns out it was only a few days after they officially supported it.

I use it everywhere and anywhere that I'm able to. Being in Europe this summer with it was especially great because I found I could use it much more often.

After my post today, I tried to use it at BJs (club wearhouse like Sams, Costco). Normally it works, but it failed 2 times in a row, my debit card (chip) worked right after.

I know that there was a Target in San Francisco where people have been having success with Apple Pay. I also think there was another Target mentioned where this is working.

I wonder if this is in beta or internally they are slowing going to be rolling this out before making any official announcement.

Really hope this happens soon company wide!

I love Apple Pay and use it wherever I can, especially with my watch. It means I don't even have to take anything in the store with me.

I'm curious about the Target Red Card---and so sorry for not knowing this-- Is it a credit card? A debit card? Some kind of points card? I'm curious about the 5% discount.

Have you tried it in the last 6 months or so? It’s gotten way more reliable.

The initial problems weren’t with Apple. It was the retailers implementing poor rollouts on old and unreliable terminals and not training their staff for it. That issue has largely gone away now. I have a lot of success using it these days, and it’s way more prevalent and everybody is familiar with it now. It’s common enough now that I don’t mind just asking the cashier if I can use it. The answer is usually yes. Unless you’re in a Target of course.

I have not had it fail in months, but that is because I no longer use it.

Chipped card reader as so fast now and near fool proof.

Yes, I was in line a few days ago watching a customer trying to use his watch for Apple Pay. He did not have his wallet with him and walked out with nothing.
