Chip and pin machines don't necessarily support nfc...

By now, most people are aware of the coming October 2015 liability deadline that encourages US merchants to install a chip & pin terminal.

That's just one push.

A older, related Visa requirement for escaping yearly security reviews, is that the terminals must include both chip and NFC readers.

"Effective October 1, 2012, Visa will expand its Technology Innovation Program (TIP) to the U.S.

TIP will eliminate the requirement for eligible merchants to annually validate their compliance with the PCI Data Security Standard for any year in which at least 75 percent of the merchant’s Visa transactions originate from chip-enabled terminals.

To qualify, terminals must be enabled to support both contact and contactless chip acceptance, including mobile contactless payments based on NFC technology."

- Visa

Visa is very serious about promoting contactless methods of payment.

As mentioned it's apparently turned off. The terminals are spec'd to have it built in.

I'm pretty sure my nearest Target has the mx925's but they might be mx915's. I didn't measure the screen specifically but recall it seemed pretty big.

Interesting. There is not indication anywhere on the terminal that it has NFC built in. I assumed the branding (the "sideways wifi symbol") was universal.

On some terminals I've seen no "hard" logo, only a "soft" logo that appears on the LCD display when the POS activates the terminals. Home Depot's self-checkout terminals do this, as did the VX820 at Subway I saw today. At Subway it appeared after I told the cashier I was paying with credit, also displayed the four circles that turned green when I made the payment from my phone. (FWIW I used a Citi MC at Subway)

And some terminals have no logos but take contactless just fine, like at this, this doesn't help the Apple Pay camp, because they take it, and don't show a logo, most people don't know they even take it here.

Not all terminals have symbols, like my example above. Contactless works fine.

Well, I got that from your responses. :) I was explaining myself, that's all.

Anyway, seems kind of... sily not to have the logo. Especially since this is just now becoming "the norm". Logos would help a lot, I think.

Kind of technical for most iPhone 6 users but if the store is using an ISS45 POS system, with a Verifone MX915/MX925 PIN pad, logo or not, NFC is enabled., this includes self checkouts with an ISS45 underpinning.

Yeah.... gonna say it's a safe bet that almost nobody knows any of this. :p

Just because someone is misinformed or misguided isn't a reason to report a thread. Otherwise, a good number of posts here would get reported.

Yeah, if we reported on misinformation, we'd be reporting posts from MR, and almost every other thread as well. This would be a virtual ghost town.

Not to mention, a lot of learning can be done by the misinformed person, as well as others who happen upon the thread by chance. I know I learned something here! :)

Chip and pin machines don't necessarily support nfc...

I certainly don't know the ins and outs of every option of available terminals but locally all the new terminals I've seen the year or two are NFC capable, whether the retailer uses the feature is a different question entirely. I just can't see in investing in a chip and pin terminal and not having NFC seeing where technology is going.

Thanks. I was already corrected above :)

What had motivate you guys to signup for apple pay in first pay. I would signup but none of my banks support apple pay and I guess american express does not support it either.

The gee-thats-neat factor played a part, or course. Security is a definite motivator though once the novelty wears off. Look at the recent data breeches at Home Depot, Target, etc. Even though I may be protected against fraud, that's an after-the-fact thing and I'd rather not have to deal with the possibility or fall-out.

Amex most certainly supports it; I have both an Amex Blue and a Costco Amex registered.

Apple Pay isn't meant for the consumer so much as it is the merchant and the card companies. There are other solutions that are geared more toward the consumer; coin, Plastc, and loop to name a few. Not to say that the consumer doesn't benefit via security and convenience, but the end goal with apple pay is cold hard cash... I'm ok with that, however, I find it still years away from being adopted by local, and regional banks, therefore as excited as I was it is currently useless to me.

Apple pay IS meant for the consumer. It is designed to be convenient, fast and secure. Everything the consumer wants. CurrentC OTOH, is all about the merchants.

Actually, threads like this that are completely wrong, should be deleted. Wrong information is misleading, and if it is not simply opinion, but factually wrong, it should be deleted.

This is a public forum, not Wiki. Unless they were purposely trolling, if someone is misinformed or misguided, you correct them.

That's your opinion, but regardless of whether or not it is Wiki or public forum, misinformation like this can confuse people. I think you should correct them, but my opinion is that the thread should be closed afterwards, so it doesn't mislead anyone else.

People have already corrected the OP and the readers will see that. What's your point?

Yes, those that keep reading, will definitely see that. This that don't, won't. Anyways, I'm not planning on sitting here, debating this with you.

And yet you keep posting....

Some American Express cards works, some don't... Usually if your bank supports Apple Pay, your American Express card should work too. Right now, the only exception is the USAA American Express card (as my sister keeps complaining about). However that card should work soon too.

I'm reluctantly with you on this one.

Lately I've noticed a marked increase in exagerrated thread titles ("Apple pay killed!" Really?). What's the point? Who does it help?
