Apple Pay today became available for use in Vietnam, which means Apple users with a debit or credit card from a participating bank can add those cards to the Wallet app for Apple Pay purchases.

Rumors about Apple Pay coming to Vietnam first surfaced in July, and several banks have been working on support for the payments service. With Apple Pay, iPhone and Apple Watch owners in Vietnam can make contactless payments at retail locations where the functionality is supported. Techcombank plans to support Apple Pay, based on a leaked support website.

Apple Pay will be available at WinMart, Phuc Long, Starbucks, McDonald's, Highlands Coffee, CGV Cinemas, and more. Payment through QR code is popular in Vietnam, so it will be curious to see how Apple Pay ends up competing.

Apple has been working to expand the availability of Apple Pay since it first launched in 2014. Apple Pay can be used in more than 75 countries at the current time, and it is expected to continue to launch in new countries as Apple establishes new deals.

Chile is expected to get access to Apple Pay starting tomorrow after two years of discussion and negotiations.

Update: Apple Pay is now live in Chile, as spotted by Apple researcher Aaronp613.

How about bringing Apple pay to a few major retailers in the US, such as Kroger, Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart?

1) Kroger does accept Apple Pay

2) It's not Apple fault that some retailers don't accept Apple Pay. Blame the retailers. Walmart wants their shoppers to use their Walmart Pay app so they can better track what their customers are buying, and to get them to use other Walmart services.

So if I am traveling internationally to a place that has ApplePay and I use ApplePay is there an additional transaction fee for a currency exchange.

Is it based on the underlying credit card company and I wonder how that works if I have an AppleCard Im using.

No Fees

We want to make it easier to pay down your balance, not harder. So Apple Card doesn’t have any fees. No annual, over-the-limit, foreign-transaction, or late fees. No fees. Really. Because your credit card should work for you, not against you.

No foreign fees on AppleCard. It's up to the individual cards. MasterCards are much more likely to have no fees. I used ApplePay in Europe for three months this spring/summer.

On that note, some people think that Apple should have rolled it out in the US a lot later than they did precisely due to the lack of infrastructure. Personally, I think that'd just have caused a bunch of US-specific terminal models without hardware NFC support to be released. Heck, we already have a fair number of US-specific readers specifically so that the hospitality industry doesn't need to have anything customer-facing.

You left out the biggest retailer ….Amazon.
More retailers would be on board if Apple lowered their fees.

Still no Apple Pay for Puerto Rican banks… and from what I’ve gathered, none of the US Territories’ banks have Apple Pay either 🤦🏻‍♂️

Only if the card issuer charges a foreign transaction fee using the physical card then they charge the same fee using apple pay. Apple Card has no such fee, so you’re good to go if you want to use it abroad with or without apple pay (do note that you can still use apple pay even if you were traveling to a country that doesn’t have apple pay, the official lack of apple pay only affects those who wish to use it with local cards).

But residents of Puerto Rico and the other territories can certainly apply for cards from banks in the 50 states, including Apple Card, so not as much of a problem as for people in unsupported countries independent from the US.

Good luck for all the international traveller's. I was recently in the Philippines and Apple Pay didn't work anywhere. No banks support Apple Pay, but I was guaranteed that international banks Apple Pay WOULD work. Such a hassle afer being so used to paying via phone and watch.

Banks are who pays those fees, not retailers. But retailers aren't inclined to do more than the minimum, either, thanks to interchange in the US being much higher than in most other places.
