Good luck for all the international traveller's. I was recently in the Philippines and Apple Pay didn't work anywhere. No banks support Apple Pay, but I was guaranteed that international banks Apple Pay WOULD work. Such a hassle afer being so used to paying via phone and watch.

It’s supposed to work so long as there is contactless payment and the card you’re trying to use is accepted. However, it looks like one of those two conditions was missing in the philippines.

You left out the biggest retailer ….Amazon.
More retailers would be on board if Apple lowered their fees.

Retailers don’t pay Apple any fees, the card issuers do to let their cardholders add their cards to wallet. Also, Amazon is an online retailer and supporting apple pay online is a whole different story. Nonetheless, Amazon does allow apple pay partially: they don’t accept it themselves, but they do allow 3rd party sellers using their platform to accept apple pay if they want to.

Correct.

I was in Chile a couple months ago and contactless using my iPhone was the way to go… very little cash changed hands. Same in Buenos Aires.

They were both met. Obviously contact payments, as it accepted with a tone and others were using contact and contactless. Yes, a Mastercard so both conditions met. In all instances the transaction failed. Some unknown error. No staff in any stores and major stores even understand these types of payments. The quisitive looks all the time. Out of about 9 transactions, the only one that worked was Starbucks.

@surfzen21 -- sorry I should correct myself, the merchant will use their own exchange rate if you pick USD and in most cases the exchange rate is better on your credit card, esp if you are using a travel card like the Chase Sapphire. Its not FTF like I said. Sorry coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

I know when I went to Canada a handful of years ago, and paid in US currency, in cash, I was getting screwed. 🥲

It seems if there is a way to take advantage of a strong dollar compared to a local currency it will be exploited.
