....You say they should have done this "a long time ago" but frankly there are bigger fish to fry than making it simpler for them to take our fare money.

Yes, and no. Token booth personnel, metrocards, theft of services...this system is going to eliminate/reduce some of those in exchange for convenience.

I want to know how the transfers are going to work, but it's been years/decades since I actually did one.

I tried it this past weekend. ApplePay with a credit card works. If you have a balance on your AppleCash Card and you try to use that it does not go through.
