I despise cash. I will use Apple Pay or a debit card for a $.50 purchase.

That said, thank you Apple/JPM for the added convenience/laziness.

If you still enter the PIN, what's the point? FaceID/TouchID authentication not enough?

I have to assume that there may be a regulatory requirement that Chase must abide by. You are just substituting Apple's Wallet in place of the ATM card itself. In addition, you can do a lot more than just withdrawal cash - you can use any ATM function this way.

Per Apple's website:
From that purely technical standpoint (and as Apple's text above indicates) "Apple Pay" involves the provisioning of payment cards into your Wallet, and the use of those provisioned cards to make payments. There are Apple-Pay-specific services and mechanisms that kick when you do those things; however, the act of simply showing the card doesn't involve those... it's absolutely no different from any other (NFC-enabled) PassKit pass.

Getting cash from an ATM is like paying yourself for a job well done!

I’ve always wondered what that little WiFi and card looking symbol was.

I have Wells Fargo and I didn’t know you can use Apple Pay with their ATMs! That’s exciting! Gonna try it out today!

Wish more places added Apple Pay! It’s so much easier to pay that way!

The ATMs at the BofA branches in my town were recently upgraded to include contactless readers. I was aware that you could access your debit card in the Wallet app to activate the ATM, but the machines didn't have the capability. Now they do, and it works great. Once you're in, just type in your PIN and then access the full suite of services that the ATM provides (withdrawals, transfers, make payments, etc.)

I just excoriated one of my wife's 20-something students who doesn't carry cash either. We were on a trip, and she could not tip the valet parker or the bell-boys at the hotel. I can assure you, those folks do not take credit cards or Apple Pay.

IMHO, it's still important to carry some cash with you at all times.

  1. Take out Debit Card
  2. Slide card into slot in ATM
  3. Enter pin #

vs.

  1. Take out iPhone
  2. Unlock (if you don't have FaceID
  3. Find app & launch it
  4. Scroll/select Chase Debit Card
  5. Tap Phone on ATM machine pad
  6. Enter pin #

I guess I'm not seeing an advantage here...

No, it's much easier than that. With my iPhone 8+ set up with my ATM card as the default, just hold your finger on the TouchID and place the phone near the reader. I get a haptic, and the machine's PIN screen appears. Takes less than 2 seconds, and much faster than getting out my wallet, pulling out the card, inserting the card, etc....

Pro Tip: It works with Apple Pay on the Watch as well! :D:D:D

I saw the symbol a few months back at my chase so I tried my phone and it worked... Great Idea and glad they did it along with being easy it's much more secure

Yes, I question whether the PIN isn't still the actual authentication here instead of FaceID or TouchID. Either way, I guess I don't understand the people that don't see the point of this because the PIN is still required. Seems obvious to me that the point is that you don't need to carry/retrieve the card anymore.

You can double tap power button on the iPhone X or double click the home button to bring up the wallet from the home screen. Doing this instant authenticates me as I do it.

I will carry a bit of cash if I am traveling. That’s a no brainer.

I even keep a $20 in our car. Then again, we drive once every week or two.

1) Pull out wallet
2) Find card
3) Pull out card
4) check for skimmers
5) Slide card into slot in ATM
6) Get read error from ATM go to step 5
7) Enter Pin

vs.

0) for a lot of people the phone is in their hand if not pull it out
1) Double click side or home but to activate
1.5) if the default card is not right pick the card...
2) Tap on ATM
3) Enter Pin..

You added steps for the phone to make the other look easier, but in normally it takes a most people longer to find their wallet (more if it's in a purse) and find the correct card in their wallet.

The advantage is that you don't have to carry or babysit a card anymore. Your instructions are a bit biased towards the card though--I'd argue that carrying/retrieving a card that is located in a wallet that is possibly located in a bag has at least as many steps as using your iPhone.

My instructions for card use would look like this:

1) Take out bag to retrieve wallet
2) Remove card from wallet
3) Slide card into slot in ATM
4) Enter PIN
5) Conduct transaction
6) Remove card from slot in ATM
7) Replace card in wallet
8) Replace wallet in bag

And for anyone that uses an Apple Watch and has their Chase card set as the default payment, it's literally as easy as pressing the watch's side button twice and holding it to the pad. This is how I do all of my ApplePay transactions--there's no way it's easier to use a card.

Not to be the the guy that spoils the party but that procedure seems more troublesome than using an regular card.

OK, it is nice for when you just want to carry the phone and need some change but I don't think it is a useful everyday solution.

Whats the use of this if you still need your PIN!

Yeah, got it, otherwise a thief can point the phone at your face and withdraw money, I have no need for this, I rarely get cash from an ATM and have my cards with me inside a pocket in the iPhone's case so there's that.

And if I tap my case against the POS it will also work, less work than ApplePay, and here in Europe there's no security risk, if there's fraud we won't have to bear the costs, no money lost.
The purpose is so that your debit card isn’t exposed as you retrieve money.

When you use Apply Pay at an ATM, there’s no risk of someone behind you attempting to see your debit card number.

But more importantly, it prevents card skimming.

I Keep my wallet in one pocket, the phone in other, both procedures are the same. Removing the wallet or removing the phone. Or the opposite in the end.
Browsing the phone/app for the card is something I find more troublesome that taking a card that is always in the same place (and I can also use as a NFC device in some ATMs).
With the Watch I can see some improvement not that much.
