In an iPhone 8, if I put the iPhone near the card reader, Apple Pay will pop up. I can then choose the card and put my finger on the home button to authenticate. In an iPhone XS, Apple Pay also pop up when I put the phone near the card reader. But the phone seems to requires me to double click the side button first before I can use Face ID to authenticate.

1) Is it possible to get rid of the double click requirement? That is, is it possible to just put the phone near the card reader, let Apple Pay pop up, and look at the phone to use Face ID for authentication. Is this possible?

2) Is it true that I have to double click the side button to initiate Face ID authentication? The double click seems to be required before the phone looks for face even if I open the wallet app or the card pop up after putting the phone near the reader. Is it true that the double click has to happen before I can use Face ID to authenticate?

What I do is double click while looking at the screen and pick the card. From there I use Face ID and then put the phone near the reader. All of that takes me less than 30 seconds.

You have to double click. And it's a double edge sword of sometimes being slower than touch id and sometimes being faster. If the terminal is behind a counter double clicking to authenticate with face id means you have a period of time to hold the phone around the obstacle without contorting your thumb and hand.
This is what @StaceyMJ86 said above.

Thanks! Yeah, I think it is just a matter of getting used to it. In terms of speed, it is probably fairly comparable to using Touch ID.

i believe it "helps" to prevent accident purchases or people just walking pass you with a wireless terminal and charging you.

You can always pick the card and double-click beforehand. Then when the time comes to do the “swipe” you’re already set up.
