Apple Pay UI on iPhone X is very slow to appear

On my iPhone X, there's a noticeable delay between when I double-press the side button and when the Apple Pay UI comes up, whereas on my 6s Plus, the Apple Pay UI appears immediately during the second press of the home button (i.e., even before the second press has completed).

Has anyone else noticed this? It's especially noticeable on my X since I have to proactively bring up the Apple Pay UI and pre-authenticate with my face before tapping my phone on the payment terminal, whereas previously I could just passively keep my finger on the Touch ID sensor and tap my phone on the payment terminal.

I don't have the accessibility shortcut set up.

How much delay? I mean, I tested it now several times (I've used it for actual payments and it feels the same). The phone is asleep, I double-click and count one thousand one, one th ... and it's ready to pay. I get one full set of "orbit" animations and it's in payment ready mode.

The delay is not so much in the authentication step, but it's in actually waiting for the Apple Pay UI itself to appear. It's definitely not a huge delay by any means, but the 6s is fast enough to feel "instant" whereas the X has a noticeable delay. It's more pronounced when the two are compared side-by-side.

Not from this X owner. It's one of the reasons I think the UI/UX is fouled up and may return the phone, even though I really love a lot of its features (and, as you know 😉 don't hate the notch - just had to say that 😀 ). Apple took a system that worked incredibly well and fast for me and made it a fairly complicated surgical operation.

If they can’t do that then it’s not intuitive.

All actions with an iPhone are learnt behaviour, you know how to do it because you’ve been taught it before, not because it feels natural to do.

Pre iPhone X you don't need to double click side button to activate wallet (and authorise by Face ID) first, just put the phone near the reader, keep your thumb on the home button, done.
I don't find any difficulty in using Apple Pay on the X, just find it not as intuitive as user action is required before putting the phone to the reader.

You don’t have to double click anything on other iPhones, you just hold it over the activated terminal and it happens automatically. It works differently on the X so that you don’t have the awkwardness of trying to have your face scanned while holding the phone over the terminal. Not an issue with TouchID since you can easily have your thumb on the home button while the phone is over the terminal.

The other difference is that with FaceID you need to get the phone into a position where it'll ID your face while you're using ApplePay. That wasn't necessary (obviously) with TouchID.

I'm not saying that it's awkward to use Apple Pay with the X, I'm just explaining why you have to double click instead of it being automatic. Unlike with TouchID, you have to be conscious of where the device is pointed when you're authorizing the payment.
Heck, if it was automatic you could even pay someone else's bill by accident of you're standing too close to the terminal while looking at the phone! LOL.
