I hope the class action suit fails.

Why?

Because this is stupid. Apple is not to blame here. All cellphones are trackable and electronically tappable. This has been the case since at least 1996. It has nothing to do with Apple. Blame the your government for passing the legislation, and blame the horribly corrupt carriers for capitulating. Corporate America at its finest, selling out its private and innocent customers to the federal government.

Apple doesn't deserve to suffer a class action lawsuit of this sort. It has literally absolutely NOTHING to do with them.

In the time it takes to read this sentance Apple will have earned enough to pay the bill around 10 times over.

Sue Sueapple? :D ;)
How about SueSueapple.com where we get a bunch of people to sue them for random reasons?
And yes, they really only see this as a money-making opportunity.

I am not sure I understand. Apple did NOT collect the data on their servers, right? It was only saved in an unencrypted file locally on your own computer?

If Apple has to pay $946 to every iPhone 4 user they will go bankrupt. I would imagine this was a huge screwup by their Korean unit, and Apple HQ will be stepping in aggressively to fix this.

It was only unencrypted if your backup was. Anyone who cared about their security could do something about it. The entire uproar was a farce.

that's going to wreak havoc on the earnings call next week....

Some people may lol, but analysts will do the math, and this could add up to a pretty hefty liability once this action goes class...

Those damn korean, they shamefully copied apple products and market as their own. Now they send their cronies to sue apple on other issue. If they have a streak of creativity, they should invent their own things, rather than copying the amercian and japanese all the time.

Apple have a big pile of cash offshore waiting for a tax break. $946 per iPhone owner would not bankrupt Apple but it would burn their cash pile. $946 per Korean iPhone owner is a lot but nothing more than a massive speed bump.

My guess is apple didn't put forth much effort for a $946 case. Class action would be a whole 'nother ball game.

Actually that is less then $10b. Not a good thing, but they have a lot more then that in cash equivalents.

Since you would never have a judgement that covered the whole world it is irrelevant. Even if they lose a class consisting of all Korean iOS users, the amount per user will likely be significantly less then 1 million won.

What does the American governments behaviour have to do with a Korean lawsuit?

$946! Hahahaaha!

They should have made Steve Jobs sit in the court personally, so after the Judge passed the decision, he could sit up, dig out his wallet and say "I think I've got that much in here".

Steve should have busted out a 3G iPad and was like "you guys just want this instead"

or

he should have given then $1,000 Apple store credit, lol

Fair enough, if Apple broke Korean law then they should face the consequences. Simple.

Don't know how you quantify the amounts. 1 million won seems a bit arbitrary, unless it is a fine laid down by statute.

But how can a software company be responsible for a bug? With the same logic I should get money every single time MSFT windows crashes? Or every single Android phone that stores the same information. The only different is that Android does not sync with an "iTunes" like program.

The whole localization scandal was a hatched job by journalists.
All phones stores cell phone data to be able to hand over from cell tower to cell tower. It also speeds up GPS localization.

iTunes make a backup of the phone. Here was the bug that did not remove the cached cell tower data.

To extract the data:
You needed the iPhone. The computer that it is synced to. The iPhone must not have an password. The backup has to be without password. The backup must not be encrypted and the computer hard drive needs to not be encrypted.
And this was a huge exploit? Crazy media.

Crashing is not against the law. Collecting data, in many jurisdictions, is.

"I swear I didn't *mean* to write that piece of software to transfer money ilegally to the Caymans! It was a bug!"
