This is the first major discount on the Apple Pencil 2 in 2024, and it beats the low price we tracked during the holidays by about $10. The Apple Pencil 2 is compatible with the following iPads: iPad mini (6th generation), iPad Air (4th generation and later), 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation and later), and 11-inch iPad Pro (1st generation and later).

If you have the newest iPad Pro models, the second-generation Apple Pencil can now be detected while hovering up to 12mm above the display. This allows users to see a preview of their drawing before they make it, and with Scribble text fields automatically expand when the pencil gets near the screen.

If you're looking for the Apple Pencil with USB-C that launched in 2023, Amazon has a smaller $10 discount on that model. It's available for $69.99, down from $79.00. Keep up with all of this week's best discounts on Apple products and related accessories in our dedicated Apple Deals roundup.

Apple: Please make an iPhone Pro Max that will support the Apple Pencil.

We've hit a point where iPhone screens are big enough where the option of Pencil-friendly capability makes sense. It would make a nice differentiator between the iPhone Pro and iPhone lines. If you've ever enjoyed a pen/pencil + Field Notes, it's a digital version of that experience. My Pencil 2 + iPad mini 6 combo has been workflow-altering. In a great way.

Apple Pencil 2, aka “the good one.”

Not sure what the latest model brings to the table other than USB-C charging — it’s not magnetic so I’ll lose it in about 20 minutes, which isn’t really a “feature” in my world.

Can they be Find My yet? Gone through about 7 of them with kids school
Well, that’s ridiculous. I’d trade those kids in for upgraded models. :)

But more seriously, the second-gen magnetically attaches to the iPad AND there are a boatload of cases that protect it when it’s attached, which really should make it much harder to lose — so maybe tell the kids that if they lose another one they’ll have to make do with the cheaper knock-off styli that are compatible (I have one of those as a backup).

I love my iPad mini and Apple Pencil 2. Im not sure how effective an iPhone Max and an Apple Pencil would be, mainly because my handwriting is on the bigger size but I can see how it would work for some.

Well, it still attaches magnetically, it just won’t charge magnetically. You won’t lose it per se, just have to keep track of where you set it to charge.

try it.. you'll be shocked.
almost 1% ipad battery drained per minute of use.
it's scandalous.
ipad also gets very hot while using the pencil.
1h of usage is almost 50% of ipad battery drained.
when you sit down and decide write something seriously, 30mn or 1h of time is not that long.

in the current state of the software for handling handwriting on ios,
if apple were to allow pencil usage on iphone, the results about autonomy would be even more dramatic.

Rumor is that they are about to release the new Pencil Pro™

Why would a pro one have a USB? the magnetic one charges in about 15 mins?

A pro one needs 2 buttons and an eraser rear tip. even if solid state.

Actually a tip both ends with magnetic tip changes... fine line, flat head, marker. All sold separately.

And sleeves for a wider body. Again Magnetic and sold separately.

I could work for Apple.

Eh? I use them constantly on various iPads and Pros. Nowhere near 1% per minute. Lasts all day. Don't see anything you are describing - heat etc.

What app are you using? Thats the more likely problem... They probably have it polling the 100x faster Than it needs to.

i use apple notes, my ipad is the pro 11" M1, my pencil is apple pencil 2. and the figures i've expressed are confirmed. if you just write quick notes, you won't notice the drain. try writing continuously for 15mn you'll see a 10% drop on ipad battery. and ipad getting hot. notes will be seen in settings>battery as top consumer. there's a bug on their software, whenever you use the pencil, the software for handling handwriting consume 100% cpu resources.

15mn = 10% ipad battery drain
30mn = 20%
1h = 40%
2h = 80%

I’d like to see ONE Apple Pencil which is compatible with all iPads. Just got a new iPad from work which isn’t compatible with the Pencil 2 I have (it needs the newer USB model). The previous model was only compatible with the Pencil 1…
(I have a 12” iPad Pro which needs the Pencil 2)

If Apple were to ever add Apple Pencil support to any iPhone then that iPhone would sell for no less than $2000.

Much easier to sell you two devices at about $1000 each.

In other words, Pencil on iPhone is never happening.

It does make sense to add USB-C to it as this supposed "Apple Pencil Pro" would probably be compatible with all iPads in the line-up, iPad 10th Gen., iPad Air, and iPad Pro.

Apple insists that the low-end, faux-Air iPad 10th Gen. can only pair with Apple Pencil through a wired connection even though both the newer $79 USB-C and 1st Gen. Lightning Apple Pencil operate via Bluetooth, wirelessly, just like every other Pencil.

Never made much sense to me.

But even if Pencil Pro does turn out to be compatible with all three iPads, I'm sure certain must-have features will only be available when using with an iPad Pro or Air. So there probably won't be much incentive to get this Pencil Pro unless you wanna use it with several different iPads(very uncommon use-case).

No way Apple will ever give iPad 10th Gen. owners the full Apple Pencil experience unless they buy an iPad Air or iPad Pro.

Just in time for Apple to release yet another Apple Pencil next month, that only works with a handful of iPads.

The fact that there isn't just one Apple Pencil for all products that support pencil input is a good representation of where Apple is today, and how far they've fallen from the principles that made them successful.

I reckon a restart might be needed. I don’t use the pencil for Apple notes very often, but it doesn’t drain the battery all that noticeably in MS notes, Nebo, safari or Survey 123, which are the apps I tend to use the pencil 2 for on my IPP.

and daughter has never mentioned it when using notes on her iPad Air.

try what i said.. just, try it. pick the pencil, write continuously for 15minutes, using apple notes, then tell me what you think about it.

This is absolutely in Tim Apple's wheelhouse. He would love to make this a reality when Steve Jobs took the piss out of styluses on phones back when the iPhone launched.
