Got my new pro. How is Apple Pencil paired? I restored from a backup and plunked the pencil on the magnetic part and there’s no notification , no charging, nothing. It doesn’t work.
Am I missing something?

Nope that should be all you need to do. Let it click into the right spot and it should ask you to connect.
You do have to wait until the setup process has at least reached the home screen. But you probably did that.

Managed to fix it by restarting the iPad.
Not sure if this was because I restored from a backup of an old pro which was paired to the older pencil.
But if anyone is in the same boat, just restart the device.

I’m having the same problem. I’ve restarted the iPad and made sure the pencil is paired. It worked once, then stopped. Thoughts?

The double tap works - I can see it change in Notes, but it won’t write.

I have a new 12.9 with Apple Pencil 2.

Now it just mysteriously started working. Not sure why.

And now it's not working again. It still registers a double tap, so I can switch between write and erase, but can't actually do either of them.

Mine did this, but you just have to wait a few minutes until it gets a charge and it also might be unresponsive if it needs to update the firmware first. I was really surprised that mine was completely run down since I saw reviewers who had theirs around 50% and Apple usually charges devices before shipping which means they usually arrive somewhere between 50-80% charged. Fortunately it seems to be charging fast like the old one, but I do wonder if the battery capacity is lower since it's a little smaller and has wireless charging components and magnets inside taking up space.

Apparently the pencil goes through a firmware update at the beginning also where it will be unresponsive, maybe that was it as well? Mine worked right away.

Mine is charged and paired. How do I know if it's going through a firmware update?
It's probably not possible like with the AirPods to see what firmware it's on or if it needs updating. I don't know that my 1st gen ever needed or got an update.

Settings|General|About|Apple Pencil will show you what firmware the pencil is on.

Here is what mine shows:

A friend of mine had his tapping stop too. It was because the pencil tip was not tight. Check if spun on completely.

OK - I feel like an idiot. The tip wasn't on tight.

My first Apple Pencil. lol

Thanks for all the help!
