Apple offers a battery replacement for the Apple Pencil for $29 according to their website. What exactly do they do? Do they actually replace the battery somehow? Or do they just replace the pencil with a new one with a fresh battery? I don't really see how they could get into the pencil non-destructively to replace the battery.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's a 'refurbished' Pencil, or even a 'new' one. Looking at ifixit's teardown it doesn't seem possible to just open it and replace the battery. Considering the 'cost' is just $29 it could be that the true cost of one replacement of a Pencil is already built into the price of a new one. In all likelihood Apple already knew what the potential fail rate is for the battery and those calculations go right into the retail price.

Yeah I chatted to Apple support and they're just sending me a new pencil.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I just saw this and I’m confused. Have they always only charged $29 or did it change at some point?
Either way, I’m confused because I went to an Apple store with a dead battery Apple Pencil in 2019 (after this thread) and they told me my only option was to buy a new pencil with a small discount (like $85 total). ??
Has anyone had a similar experience or did Apple only charge $29? Did I just get a bad service person?

Oh no I meant was battery replacement not offered originally and it was later changed to $29? Because like I mentioned above, I was rejected a battery replacement when I brought my dead pencil in. But the confusing part is this was in 2019.

As you mentioned in your post I'm sure the Apple specialist wasn't the best informed employee there. It may be he was never approached by someone who was looking for the $29 repair before and just thought you had to buy a new pencil.

Yeah I don’t know what other explanation there could be, unless they suspected it wasn’t the battery and that I messed up the pencil some other way (I didn’t). I don’t know if they had some secret way of running diagnostics on the pencil, but if they did and found the problem wasn’t just the battery, they didn’t give me any explanation, only that I had to buy a new pencil (actually refurbished), and they wanted to take my dead pencil. So glad I refused. I should dig it up and head back to the Apple store when it opens up.

Show them the support document if they give you any trouble...
