It would be just like Apple these days to introduce a new pencil that is only compatible with new hardware or if you want to use it with older hardware it will be clunky to do so. They really need to streamline and simplify the iPad lineup and it feels like they’re going to keep it as messy as ever.

This is exciting as it means more advanced pencil features. Price is irrelevant as long as the technology is improved.
It is absolutely not irrelevant. There might be a few who are willing to pay upwards of 200 for a frigging stylus, but they’re gonna drive away many more. At some point the features and tricks stop justifying the price.

Is that gonna be like the pencils we had in kindergarten that were twice the diameter of regular No. 2's?
Maybe like this:

Would have complemented the Apple Car.

Welcome back to to 1990s Apple before Steve Jobs' return.

Nope. Even if you hated having model numbers (I didn't, it was actually REALLY helpful to be able to know what a computer was just by looking at the front panel), at least there were model numbers printed on the front panel.

With these stupid pencils, you can't tell them apart. You have no idea if a given pencil will work with a given iPad.

It's the opposite of "it just works" that used to be a thing with Apple.

Haha. This is their justification to increase the price. Typical Apple

It’s an option within the lineup of accessories. You can buy one of the cheaper pencils if you prefer.

Things don't have to be this way. I don't understand why you can't make one pencil that "recognizes" hardware feature sets of older iPads and just make do whatever is available on those older iPads. Sure people will be paying for senors and such that may never be used, but by building one pencil in a larger volume would have to help reduce inventory and warehouse costs. Apple might only make 37% profit on each one sold instead of the normal 40%. So what. It'll help the general customer who wants one but might be confused when looking at them all and not buy one at all.

And it still runs a phone OS…
Agreed. This is so sad in 2024. An M4 iPad running a 16 year old phone OS. 😣 Guess this is what happens when you have no real competition in this particular market.
