I say keep the score.

I know people who like to repair their devices themselves so its useful knowing how repairable something is.
How ma you people do you know who would expect to be able to repair an Apple Pencil themselves. Repairability scores are fine for certain things but not accessories like this.

I assume there's a 1-year warranty on the Pencil. After that you may be SOL. It'd be strange to offer Apple Care for such a device, but it'd be nice to see Apple stand behind such a product for at least a couple of years.

I enjoy the iFixit teardowns for one reason -- I am a techie and love to see the innards of things. The reality is that 99% of all consumers of any technology do not have the skills or time to fix things and will either pay someone else to do so or will simply replace it. I am always amazed by this fact. I love to tinker and will fix anything in my house or even with electronics. But all my friends call a plumber, electrician, or other handyman to get things done. Same here, it is more important to make things work well and last as much as possible, not to make them repairable by a consumer, because they won't. Many on this site are the tinkerers, but please remember that in this case we are the 1%ers not the commoners.

Notably, I believe this is the first apple device using BLE 4.1 standard? Am I correct? This may be a sign that they are moving toward the most recent BLE standard in all products in the near future...

Shocking!

Tiny piece of tech isn't serviceable.

I appreciate them exposing the amount of tech that Apple was able to stuff into something like that though. I really can't wait for new iPad Minis that can take advantage of the Pencil. Tablets were just meant to be written on and not with stubby styli or fingers.

A battery, antenna, and a logic board?! NO WAY! No one would have ever expected such things in a device like that!

I wonder if they will allow the iPad and iPad mini to use the Pencil. That takes away a BIG selling point of the Pro and would greatly hurt sales of the device.

I could see Apple keeping the Pencil exclusive to the Pro.

Way back a long time ago, AppleCare covered any computer accessories (normally monitors) purchased when you bought a computer. They could offer something similar for the pencil and keyboard if they wanted to.

I disagree. I could see Apple giving the next versions of the iPad and iPad mini the screen-sensing tech for Pencil operation. They would sell a lot more iPads that way. The iPad Pro while super nice, is not for every one with its large screen size.

I like seeing the teardowns. I think we can do without the scores, especially with devices like this. Most people will either pay someone to fix it or just get a new one. Very few people fix their broken tech devices.

And they would sell a ton more Pencils! I'm guessing here, but I'll bet the margins on those Pencils will be pretty high after the R&D costs are recovered.

I think iFixit repairability scores have served their time. It's time to stop this. You can't continue to make things smaller, more compact and more advanced, and still lay it out so the average Joe can replace every part with a screwdriver and some elbow grease.
When the world went Surface Mount for chips, I put the soldering iron down.

I do disagree, though... elbow grease will get you a new :apple: Pencil if used to make more money...

What I tell my kids where to go to get money: "go to work"

Actually the refreshed iPods use BLE 4.1!

But then why do people want the iPad Pro? That's a LOT of extra money to pay just for a bigger screen. Right now the Pencil is a way to make people pay more to buy the bigger device. If you take that away you cannibalize sales of the iPad Pro to increase sales of the less profitable iPad and iPad mini.

I'd be willing to bet that they don't add support for it the next time around. iPads sell already. They have to keep a reason for people to upgrade to the bigger device. iPad and mini already sell without the need to add the Pencil and adding Pencil support isn't going to increase new iPad sales as much as it will cut into iPad Pro sales.

This is why iFixIt is struggling so much. Years ago people were more apt to replace their own stuff. Now they either can't or stuff is cheap enough they don't bother and just buy a new one.

Prices have come way down on replacement parts and iFixIt no longer runs the market. You can get the exact same parts from other retailers and the profit margins are so slim that they make pennies off of most. They're likely to go out of business in the next couple years if they don't figure out a new line of business.

Limited lifespan.... Let's see. If it lasts as long as my original iPad that 'limited lifespan' would be FIVE AND A HALF YEARS AND COUNTING!

Ok $99 seems appropriate. That seems pretty cool.

Not 100% sure. I would say less than 15 USD components. However, assembly must be tricky and can only be done by tiny fingers in an Foxcon or Quanta factory. At least 50% margin.

Bummer the pen's tip has been made out of copper or messing. I anticpated the use of ivory from an Unicorn.

iFixit need to tear down the Galaxy Note stylus and give a repairability score too.

Apple has purposely made all their new products unrepairable by anyone other than themselves, yet iFixIt continues to doggedly report each new product's "repairability score". This is always entertaining to me.
