I have an Apple Pencil first generation that wasn’t used for a year and now it won’t charge.
For such an expensive device it should have a better battery. I have old li-on batteries for cameras that continue to charge just fine.
Does anyone have any advice on how to charge an unused pencil?

Forget about it—the Pencil is broken because the battery has been deeply discharged. I had the same thing happen with an Apple Pencil. You can check out the info on iFixit if you want.

The 1st gen Apple Pencil seems to have two modes:
  • fully working
  • ancient artifact discovered by archaeologists
  • Jokes aside, leave it plugged into the iPad longer than you think necessary. Some people report it randomly comes back to life after 30–90 minutes.

Thanks, I did try recharging it for a day, connected to a charger, not the iPad, but it didn’t work, and then I tried putting it under a heating pad for a while before charging, and it finally showed up in the Bluetooth and stayed, but reported only 3% charge and won’t work.
I will nurse it some more, heating and charging for a longer time to see if the charge level changes. My wife also has the same pencil and problem, so I can experiment with both of them.
Meanwhile I got a pencil from Amazon that looks much like an Apple Pencil and does the same thing for 15£.
So far it’s fine but I can return it if it stops working in 30 days.

Let us know if it worked, because my Apple Pencil is still recognized by the iPad, but the battery level never goes above 1%, and in no time at all, the Pencil disappears from the iPad with no power left.

Update. Nothing worked for either Apple pencil after charging for over a day and with gently heating the pencil.
The pseudo Apple Pencil I bought for £11 works fine and even has a sort of pressure sensitivity for line thickness by how much you tilt the pencil while drawing.
