Apple Phone and FCC Regulations

While it seems that some analysts expect Apple to introduce an Apple Phone at Macworld San Francisco, Ton Sacconaghi of Bernstein Research disagrees.

Sacconaghi points out that Apple has not yet received FCC approval for a mobile phone, which means that even if a phone is introduced at Macworld, it would not be a shipping product. He reports that phones typically are available approximately two months after FCC approval is obtained.

Most rumors have pointed to a 1st half of 2007 release time-frame for the Apple Phone.

I've read posts around here before from people who knew the same thing. I wonder if Apple could get around putting its name on an FFC regulations proposal. Either way, if its not the iPhone at Macworld, it'll be something else that will blow our socks off!

What if....

Do they still need to get approval if the phone is simply part of an existing design? Aka, what if they release new iPod models that simply have the phone as a *new* feature, similar to what they did with video....
