I've come across an issue while importing photos and videos into the Apple Photos app, and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.
These video files were originally taken with an iPhone. When I use the Import function in Apple Photos, it shows everything that needs to be imported. I proceed with the import, but afterward I notice that some of the .MOV files were not actually imported. If I try to import the same folder again, Photos only shows the video files as needing to be imported.
From what I understand, the issue may be related to Apple Photos no longer supporting the codecs used by some of these older video files, even though they are .MOV files and were originally recorded on an iPhone.
The problem is that I have many different folders containing hundreds, if not thousands, of video files. I can use HandBrake to convert the videos to MP4, which works, but then I have the problem of potentially creating/importing duplicates since I don't always know which videos were successfully imported into Photos and which ones weren't.
The same concern applies if I simply drag and drop the folders directly into Apple Photos.
Has anyone run into this issue while consolidating a large photo/video collection? How did you deal with it?
Is there a good way to identify which videos are already in Apple Photos, determine which ones are unsupported, and then convert/import only the ones that are actually needed?
Any suggestions or recommended tools/workflows would be greatly appreciated! 😊
P.S. I was also considering getting Lightroom and importing all of my existing Photos libraries, along with all the folders that haven’t been imported yet. However, I’m not sure if that would be the best approach.
