Perhaps there is no connection, however when I was getting off the train last night I couldn't help noticing there was a pack of the "End of the world" types hanging around.

They claim they know the date of the second coming. And it is May 21, 2011.

Retail employees were told this week via e-mail that they may not request days off between May 20 and May 22, AppleInsider has learned. It was said that store managers are "very excited" about those dates, but no other details are available.

That'll be the 21st then.

No days off memo May 20-22 is related to launch of OS LION. This is being done so that all the Apple assocites can be trained in this New operating system and be able to knowledgeably handle all problems and questions.
Remember 'LION' is new on many fronts and not just an update.
As for the 10th Anniversary Retail Event don't expect to much and you will not be dissapointed. Yes there is a plan for something but its not a launch or anything substantial.

I've got to say, the comparison with Gateway is pretty funny....where are they now?

Considering how it was started I think they did pretty well.

Gateway was founded on September 5, 1985, on a farm outside Sioux City, Iowa, by Ted Waitt and Mike Hammond. Who would have guessed out of a barn is where they where building them.

I owned a Gateway years ago, they where sweet machines back in the 90's great gaming machines but they just should have tucked with what worked and not jump all over the place. Oh well I am sure the founders are living high and rich even if the company failed.

Glad to know Apple has never been a Dell or a Gateway and thanks to Steve we as consumer have had a fun time riding its success with products and  stocks.

Hate to see Steve leave us do to his unfortunate life turn of events not sure how Apple will do without him. Still its a much more mature company that it was 20 years ago.

looking forward to event

I am not sure what Apple is planning for the event. I am hoping for some discounts on some items and maybe a t-shirt to commemorate the event.

I wonder what Mr. Goldstein is doing nowadays?

You obviously haven't used Lion. Nowhere near ready for primetime.

Any discounts will be totally lame.

T-shirts unlikely but they could surprise us

by the time May 20 rolls around who knows where it could be. And even if it isn't ready doesn't mean they won't start training folks.

There are meetings planned for all retail store employees between those dates, it's all very hush hush and there's been at least a month and a half pre-warning about it.

Steve Jobs: Hey, I read on the internet that our retail stores' 10th anniversary is coming up.

Tim Cook: Really? We ought to do something.

Steve Jobs: Make sure there's a press release.

Tim Cook: Good thing they reminded us. How about everybody spending $100 at a store on May 19th gets a free 0.99$ iTunes credit. That'll be fun.

Steve Jobs: Make it $500.

Its always funny to read analyst predictions that are so wrong.

Yeah I love all the "professional" analysts that are wrong almost every time with their predictions. "My research tells me that the iPhone 5 will be faster and have a pullout keyboard and a built in blutooth charger/holder slot with OLED 7 inch screen."
