The Jerusalem Post reports (via Forbes) that Apple is moving forward on plans to build a massive new store in Jerusalem, Israel sometime within the next three years. At a claimed 5,000 square meters (over 50,000 square feet), the store would be by far the largest in Apple's retail chain. According to the report, the store will include an "Apple Digital Library" open to the public, but it is unclear exactly what such a library would offer.
Jerusalem may become home to a giant Apple store and education center within three years. Apple is negotiating with real-estate giant Bet Yair for a 5,000-square-meter facility at the entrance to Jerusalem, people familiar with the matter told The Jerusalem Post. The facility is planned to hold the world's first Apple Digital Library, which would be open to the public.

The article refers to "directors of Apple in Israel" having toured the site and expressing their desire to "bring the country's largest Apple store" to the area, casting some uncertainty on just who is responsible for the plans. Apple does not currently have a direct presence in Israel, only holding a distribution arrangement with reseller iDigital, a subsidiary of the iCon Group operating several retail stores in the country.

Sounds like a dream, but I doubt it will happen. Apple does not even operate in Israel.

Too bad....

My hometown is just 20 minutes away but I'm barred by the Israeli military from re-accessing my birthplace Jerusalem since I'm of the wrong tribe. That sucks; an Apple Store plus library in that part of the country would be a tremendous asset to us all.

Instead of an app for avoiding drunk driving checkpoints will they have an app to avoid terrorist incidents?

was a matter of time for a comment like this to happen. its a little known fact that you are many more times more likely to be in an automobile accident than a terrorist attack in Israel. Israel is actually safer than many parts of the US. its just our neighbors that portray a bad community.

But seriously, Apple store in Israel?!?!? Genius and a very very long time coming. iDigital stores suckkkkkkk.

Is that a fact…

dont wanna get all political, so lets just keep my statement at its face value. i was talking about the lack of danger of being in Israel and nothing more. either way, we are talking about an Apple store in the region, not the region itself so no need to talk about anything else :) .

I call BS on this rumor. Apple stores have only been opened in countries where Apple has had a direct phone sales team. That's not currently the case for Israel.

Additionally, I have a hard time believing that Apple will have a 'digital library' in Jerusalem before they've opened something like that in NYC, London or other cities with far more retail potential.

Finally, why would Apple put a store in Jerusalem before Tel Aviv? IIRC, there are few tech companies in Jerusalem as compared with Tel Aviv or Haifa. And while Jerusalem has many tourists and students, I have a hard time imagining that they would be purchasing Apple products in Israel as opposed to in their home countries.

My 2 NIS.

I smell BS.

- Why an Apple store in Jerusalem before Tel Aviv? Jerusalem hardly has the population of rich middle class kids (flame underpants on!)

- Why build the biggest ever Apple retail store *there*?

- What's this digital library idea? Why launch it *there*?

BS for sure. Someone somewhere is trying to talk up some real estate. I'd look at whoever owns the local land / shopping estates, or maybe a nearby large owner trying to off-load their leases in the recession.

*warning* ignorant american comment *warning*

Will the Genius Bar be known as the new wailing wall?

It must be an April Fool's joke.

The population is too small, the speakers of Aramaic, Hebrew and Yiddish are infinitesimal on a global scale and if Apple were to introduce a new "library" it would be in Alexandria, Egypt or another historically significant place of learning.

Israel is a safer place than many Western countries because they're not afraid to engage in profiling people. If the West tried such a thing the idiotic Leftist leaning media would immediately scream racism/islamophobia and the establishment would be pilloried.

I support Israel, it's the only free country in the Middle East. I hope Apple invests in Israel as I'm sure they could only benefit from the concentrated expertise there.
