Apple should quickly copy Google’s passport program for people whose states can’t get their act together on driver’s licenses

I'm guessing NY/NYC can't figure out a way to incentivize it yet.

Well they decided to do their own app which is how they are incentivizing it lol And of course it is NOT apple wallet compliant. It's also trash & not accepted as an actual ID outside of a few places, so basically useless.

These are less replacements for physical ID cards, as they are online equivalents to be used in the future for apps and websites, starting with social media and adult sites.

On brand for NY. Thanks for the info by the way, I had no idea that this existed.

Coming to Illinois starting 1/1/2025 BUT NOT to Apple Wallet. You will need to download a special app to download your digital license. In addition there’s a gotcha in the law that allows police to request the physical license which means you still have to carry your physical drivers license. Why even have a digital license then?
Totally effed up. So Illinois. *sigh*

This way, when you get pulled over, you’re going to hand your unlocked phone to the police when asked for your license and registration. Not sure many lawyers think that’s a great idea.
I agree with this whole heartedly, never going to use this for that reason alone. Not that I have anything to hide but if it ever comes up and they need my phone they will need to go through the proper legal steps of getting a warrant etc.

I live in California and it can not be used with Cops during traffic stops as stated. You still need the actual Driving License, even the electronic one is issued by the DMV. BevMo will not accept it as age verification either. It’s been pretty useless so far. Hope it gets better.

This. I would never ever give a cop my phone or let them scan anything from it, locked or unlocked, for any reason.

Was similar in CO. First it was an app but still needed physical. Then the app was good enough for businesses and cops, and now it’s in wallet. Took a little time.

Where's yours at 'Show Me' State?
Come on, Missouri. If you keep looking back...you can't move forward.

Understand that the phone remains locked and encrypted, and only relevant information on the ID is shared with law enforcement digitally.

It’s ironic you’re hesitant to transmit sensitive info in a safe manner (why your phone remains locked and secured), but do you have any residency handing your ID to a cashier or bartender? When they can view your height weight home address etc? If instead you used the digital ID version, the cashier only receives relevant info (birthdate), and the rest is not shared.

Perhaps do a bit more reading on how the system works.

They've been advertising that Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) supports digital IDs, and there are signs all over the airport bragging about it, and yet when I asked the TSA guy where to tap my phone he absolutely barked at me and demanded to know what I was talking about. This, despite there being a 24x36 poster advertising the feature less than two feet from the guy's head.

I had to hold up the line while I dug around for my physical ID. Silly.

And then there’s that.

I think I’d fall into the same boat, too. I just love tech. 🥺
And then there this, Ive had a physical license for decades and I've never had to used it in a stop. I've used it for clubs, bars and buying alcohol. I guessing that if you are like me your not a savage on the roads. 😂

Apples to oranges. I have no reservations at all with handing over my physical ID that has limited information vs my phone with GBs of information.

Nope, cops are not allowed to even touch my phone without a warrant. Also, there is a reason why they quit putting SS#s on physical DLs.
