Apple Plans to Expand iPhone Driver's Licenses to These 7 U.S. States

In select U.S. states, residents can add their driver's license or state ID to the Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, and then use it to display proof of identity or age at select airports and businesses, and in select apps.

The feature is currently available in 13 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, and it is expected to launch in at least seven more in the future.

To set up the feature, open the Wallet app and tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner. Next, select Driver's License and ID Cards and follow the steps.

Supported States

The following 13 states offer driver's licenses in the Wallet app:

• Arizona (since March 2022)
• Maryland (since May 2022)
• Colorado (since November 2022)
• Georgia (since May 2023)
• Ohio (since July 2024)
• Hawaii (since August 2024)
• California (since September 2024)
• Iowa (since October 2024)
• New Mexico (since December 2024)
• Montana (since August 2025)
• North Dakota (since September 2025)
• West Virginia (since October 2025)
• Illinois (since November 2025)

The feature is also available in Puerto Rico.

Future States

Apple and local DMV offices have announced that the following U.S. states have signed on to adopt the feature, but no timeframes were disclosed:

• Connecticut
• Kentucky
• Mississippi
• Oklahoma
• Utah
• Arkansas
• Virginia

Participating Airports

Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 airports in the U.S., for domestic travel. Given that Apple Wallet IDs are not accepted by law enforcement, and lack many other use cases, carrying a physical ID is still necessary.

Travelers should refer to TSA signage to confirm availability of the feature.

Digital Passport

If you live in a state that does not yet offer Apple Wallet IDs, you can now create a Digital ID based on your U.S. passport, and present it at the same participating TSA checkpoints, for age and identity verification purposes during domestic travel. It is not a replacement for a physical passport, and it cannot be used for international travel.

I don't know what is required from the state side, but maybe write to your congress man and/or state senator?

Because the fastest way to make it so one does not need to carry a physical copy, is to get one. Since every state DMV that participates in this program, knows how many people have activated it, the more people that use it, the easier it is to justify the costs for upgrading other systems to enable it.

NY has their own app, that (from reading most reviews) seems to be a steaming POS. No way I'll be using that app.

Not that I care much. I don't know of any place that I might go which will accept this in lieu of my physical license, which I would continue to carry with me anyway.

I worry a little bit that once we link our "digital ID" to our devices we will actually lose an element of privacy. But that is an article for another day.

While I agree, until the fed and the states officially say "can be used in lieu of a physical ID", it's somewhat vaporware, and I'm afraid it'll take more than a decade to get there

Tried the Passport ID at TPA and it didn’t work. Was pretty bummed out.

The biggest problem will probably be if Apple gets accepted in a few other countries the EU will mandate the use of some other standard.

also, states law needs to required businesses to accept digital IDs

As far as I understand it you just tap a reader like Apple Pay, only instead of a cc it’s your id
