2019 - another lost year for iPhones, right? Who would want an intel iPhone when intel itself admits
their modems are horrible and they are not able to make them at all? Crazy.

They are going to be 4G phones just like before. Besides, there is more to using an iPhone thank just the modem. This is something the average user unless you read Macrumors and The Verge doesn’t care about. When I look around my environment, I see way more Touch ID based iPhones than Face ID iPhones.

The reality is, some users will keep their phones for a long time because it meets their needs. To browse Facebook or Twitter, Instagram, which is what I observe a lot of people do on public transportation - doesn’t require 5G. The fact they are even doing it now proves that even more. Sure, you will occasional bored antisocial millennial kid watching YouTube, but that’s the exception.

When your reception is way worse with intel than it would be with Qualcomm, sorry, but yes, it's important.
I don't want another XS fiasco when you can't call/receive calls where you easily could with a 7+.

It's not over. This will continue to get ugly as:

1) class action lawsuits against Apple will pop up over customers being forced into buying inferior and now abandoned Intel baseband radio which will negatively impact resale value

2) Intel can run but they may still be liable for antitrust in collusion with Apple against Qualcomm

Best outcome is Intel gets fined again for antitrust and Apple gets new leadership because he's done too much irreversible damage.

Why is it to late for 2019, don't they start producing the iPhones sometime between May and June every year, or is something else causing the issue?

They likely have already signed a contract with Intel for modems this year, so I think it is a little too late to change supplier.
The bottom line is having 5G modems in 2020, that's why they settled with Qualcomm.

Cook had a weak hand but made a smart play when he folded. Too much at stake given the screw-up was largely the fault of Steve Jobs protecting iPhone like a computer not a phone.

This is good news for those who prefer Qualcomm modems and want to start using 5G service next year.

This is a complete non-news item! If you bother to research 5G you’ll discover it can use any one of 3 frequencies. It’s only the highest frequency that gives the 100MB /sec download but only if there are mobile towers every 100 meters!! The medium & low frequencies are barely any better than 4G. As New Scientist put it in a recent article - “5G is a technology looking for a application”! Don’t panic about 5G it’s a waste of time!
5G is needed for full automated driving for instance. We will have mobile towers in almost every lamppost and traffic light. If this will be made true, time to purchase some stock. :)

Glad I upgraded from the 7 to the Xs, Xs to the iPhone 12 (?) will be a great upgrade.

Yup ... did the same thing ... I'll hand my XS to one of my kids ... and then renew with the 2020 or 2021 model.

Gigabit LTE on the XS I think should hold out fine enough till 2020.

Incorrect, 5G is about surveillance.

if the 2019 iPhones don't have 5G modems and now it's confirmed that the 2020 iPhones will have the state of the art Qualcomm 5G modems... who's gunna want to buy a 2019 model unless they're yearly upgraders? Just another camera lens for 2019 isn't gunna cut it.
The "next feature to get" will be a 5G iPhone

People who don't care about 5G?

Because Apple does so much stuff on-device, it's less of a problem for them IMO.

E.g. the iPhone can index and analyze all your photos completely offline.

Yawn. Cell phones have allegedly been giving us cancer for how long, now? Has there been a statistically significant increase in cancer rates for relevant cancers such as brain cancer associable with the rise of cell phones?

Cancer as a whole is on the rise as a cause-of-death, AFAIK.

The big question is: what exactly causes each type of cancer?

In any case, big-pharma is happy to give you another year or six-months for a couple of hundred thousands.
So, no need to delay 5G until things can be researched well enough.

Our chemistry-teacher once told us that even until the sixties of last century, shoe-shops had little machines you could stand on and it would xray your feet so the salesman (or your mother) could see if the shoes fit!

Everybody thought, it was a great idea.
