I also think the difference between the 5s and 6 was too minimal so I went with the 6 plus. I do agree that the 6plus is slightly too big but the battery makes up for it. I think a 5" screen would be the best option as long as they make it thinner. Maybe Apple can reduce the bezel on the 5.5 and make it more comfortable in hand

Less Can Be More . . .

For many iPhone users, a 4" screen trades off a smaller screen for improved portability and ease of one-handed use. In my case, these 4" benefits are crucial to my enjoyment of iPhone use. It will be most disappointing if Apple elects to not offer an updated 4" offering in its iPhone line-up.

For me, the 3,5 inch screen is still the best for a phone. I hope Apple makes iPhone mini in the future, with updated internals to be as good as current flagship models. I guess I would accept 4 inch screen if there were less bezels..

That's what I thought when I were trying to decide between the 6 and 6+. When I finally realize that I would have to change my lifestyle significantly to accommodate a 6+, things like having to carry a backpack or a bag for a phone, or keeping having to removing it from my pocket when I sit down, I decided that the trade off wasn't worth it when I would get in return is a device with a screen significantly smaller than an iPad Mini. I still prefer my iPad Air to a Mini for browsing, so the 6+ is still a big compromise, with a huge compromise for one handed use and portability. In short, it's too big to be personal, yet not big enough to be useful all the time.

Having using a 6 for a week now I realize what a significant upgrade it is from a 5 for one handed mobile use. I read a lot of technical docs and books on my 5 in bed or when I am out and about. I also use OneNote to write docs. On the 5 it felt quite cramp but I made do with it. On the 6, it's a pleasure to do those things. The screen can display the content of a paper back page which is more than satisfactory. OneNote works beautifully on it.

I think to make a good case of why a screen size is good enough, one has to consider what one does with the device. At the end of the day, these things are tools that we use to accomplish tasks. If it works well for the tasks you want to do, then it's good enough. Don't chase the specs. Sometime less is more.

I agree although realistically I don't see anything smaller than 4" coming out if they make an iPhone mini, unless Android starts to go toward smaller screens again and Apple decides to copy.

If I could have my preference for the lineup I'd like to see apple offering three sizes, 3.5", 4.5", and 5.5" then there would be something close to what most everyone wants. Especially if Apple made the hardware as close as possible between the sizes.

I tried out the 6 Plus and its too big. I also held the 6 and its also too big. I love the size of my iPhone 5. Is anyone hoping that the iPhone 5s gets updated to have the 6 internals with the S version. I really hope it does. I really loved that form factor. Its a shame they didn't update the 5S with 6/6+ internals.

You'll get used to the size especially how thin the 6 is.

Next year you can have a plastic phone. The 6c with nfc but lacking some of the better internals of the 6 and 6+. Apple need more people using nfc so you can have plastic (iphone) to spend plastic (credit card)

Stop worrying and enjoy life. Plastic is making s come back in the form of the 5c body/iphone nfc

Imagine the same argument applied to other items like shoes, gloves, bikes.

The circumference of the iP6 is longer than the iP5. The reduction thickness of the iP6 compared to the iP5 only make a few millimeters difference, where as the increase width of the iP6 contribute significantly to the circumference of the iP6.

The iP6 can be paper thin and it wouldn't make a realistic difference to reachability.

Sorry, OP, I don't think Apple will be doing this.

Well if OP is lucky, Apple may use their C line of phones as the small size.

----------

If there is sufficient demand in the market for a smaller phone, I could see Apple putting out a '6c' or whatever with a smaller screen. The question is whether or not there's sufficient demand, and I doubt there is.

I've learned to never say never when it comes to Apple. People thought they'd never do an iPad mini, never do an iPhone 'phablet', etc. - yet, there they are. Apple may have a 'roadmap', but they also pay attention to where the money is (and they'd be fools not to).

I think there is a market for it. I see a huge amount of people comainig about big phones, and right now there are no premium phones on the market to serve their needs.

I can assure you Apple will continue to offer a 4" screen phone. There are just too many people that still prefer the smaller form factor and are not wanting a "jumbo" screen like all of the new generation phones offered by all of the companies. The demand will always be there and Apple will not sacrifice those sales.

Do you have any solid statistics to back up your claim?

Sorry. That ship done sailed. You want to blame someone? Blame Samsung, HTC, LG, etc for making huge phones the standard.

Bear in mind that Samsung, LG, HTC etc., also make smaller screened phones. Whilst it's the market that is showing large screen phones are what most people want, it's Apple who aren't catering for those people that don't want a large screen.

However, you don't see them pushing the smaller screen phones. Samsung's tag line is not "The Next Small Thing is Here"
All flagship level phones are 4.5" screens and higher.

I actually think that Apple will keep a 4" device in the lineup. There are use cases for a small phone, and many people will still continue to prefer something that is so handy as a 5S.

As for me, I was a big believer in the 4" size, but I experimented with a 4.7" Android device (Redmi 1S) and found out that it was not that much more less portable and after a while I found myself leaving my iPhone 5 at home. It was really so much better for reading and maps.

So the next step, I was really curious about a large phone so I took the plunge and got a 6+. At first I thought it was a mistake, but it did not take long for me to get hooked as I found that I started to do things I was using my iPad for - yes I can actually edit a PowerPoint and and Excel spreadsheet on it - something pretty much impossible with the 5. Also, for travel its so much better for maps and web browsing. I found that I could just take the 6+ and leave the iPad behind.

I will probably still keep the 5 as there are times that I like something really unobtrusive to stick in my front pocket, but overall I'm stuck on the larger form factor now.

For those who have not tried a larger device, my advice is give a larger device a try - not just a cardboard cutout or spending 15 minutes with it at Best Buy.

android

I support the OP on this, Apple needs to maintain a 4" (ish) screen phone with modern specs in their lineup. They have taken it upon themselves to take on "the whole world" in the walled garden, and as such they alone carry the burden of meeting their customers needs or losing them to another platform.

My personal example is this: I moved from an iPhone to a Nexus 5 last year as I wanted a bigger screen AND a cheaper platform, spending 800+ on a phone every couple years? "that ship has sailed for me". On the other hand, my wife, who has always been an android user, was extremely tempted by a 5c a month ago when purchasing a new phone as the standard android offerings are just too big for her. However, the 5c is a 2 year old phone packaged in a 1 year old body, and so Galaxy Alpha ended up being the (reluctant) choice. If Apple had updated the 4" phone lineup this fall with everything else, they might have gained a customer, she loves her iTouch (another ignored platform).

Ok, now for the rant! :) - I've been an "apple guy" for years but I'm down to 2 year old laptop and a couple iPads (iPad still destroys the competition, so good!). The erosion of support for Aperture drove me to build a quality PC for 1/3 price of Mac Pro and run Lightroom. I can't imagine my next laptop will be a Mac and the Nexus 9 looks like an awfully nice tablet... Getting the feeling that Apple isn't dynamic enough, or at least that I'm no longer their target customer. I haven't worn a watch for about 8 years now, can't imagine that's going to change in February! LOL /rant

Totally agree - because the majority of people want larger phones, so flagship phones will be larger.

But if people are going to choose Apple, they need to understand that you get what you're given. Apple offer three (?) phones. Last year's model, a new one that's bigger and a phablet. And that's it.

Windows phone and Android users have a much, much greater choice

My wife has a 5s and it feels like a kids toy to me now, I can't believe I ever used a screen so tiny and fiddly. You'll get used to it quick.

No, you need to blame the consumer. I love my 6, it is what I had wished the 5/5s would have been.

If there is demand, Apple will keep providing the 5/5S for those who did not want a larger phone. If the demand is there Apple will comply.

There isn't a big difference between the 5S and the 6 right now.
Just buy an iPhone 5S

And blame also the crowd of whiners that bashed Apple on their tiny display for years...

Compared to the 5s, is the 6 (not 6+) screen better than the 5S in terms of contrast and color saturation?

It is slightly better

Apple should still continue with a starter entry iPhone like the 5C. Keep it basic with with only 8GB storage and two year old SoC inside. At $450.00 it is a bargain for students and the elderly segment.

Over priced. At 200 maybe an ok deal but still stunted by 8gb for what amounts to a text message machine

The iPhone is Apple's bread and butter. There will always be a demand for the 4" screen phone. Apple will continue to offer this size phone, they will not give up those sales.

Those small screened phones on android are generally crippled compared to the flagship models. Yeah there are a lot of people who want big phones, but I think there also are a lot of people who want good specs in their phone and settle for a big phone since there isn't anything else available. I'll be much more inclined to believe that's what the market wants if there is an option for people to buy smaller phones and they don't go for it.

Although I've identified through long term first hand experience that tiny iPhones don't work for me, I appreciate your needs and opinion.

I truly believe Apple has cheated both themselves and their customers. After spending year after year programming Apple buyers that Steve knew better than they did, tiny iPhones sold very well. When they finally caved in to public demand, they should have performed a very slight styling change to make that the stand out difference while producing three sizes. 4", 5", 5.7".

A selection like that would have satisfied nearly everyone, plus generated even more revenue for Apple.
