I really hope Apple release the podcast app for Apple Watch

When I'm out walking or running I'd rather listen to a podcast than music. I can't be alone in doing this. I thought it would have been an app that they would have considered for the original release.

Overcast has a watch app.

I listen to podcasts when I run also. I think they may need to re-work the podcast app for the watch because the download button wouldn't work if there is no phone nearby with a data connection.

Thanks for the suggestion of Overcast.

Just downloaded it, looks pretty good right now. If it work on the Apple Watch I think I'll purchase the full version.

Maybe because I generally don't like 'workout' music or the genre I listen to is not really suited for running, but I've been favoring podcasts when I run/workout too. Indoors, I just put on an episode of QI and I barely even notice how far I've gotten :)

Anyway, seconding Overcast, I actually bought it just for the Smart Speed feature, which speeds up silences. I'm pretty sure I saved up a ton of minutes already by having that on. I listen to lengthy podcasts like ATP, No Such Thing As a Fish, The Talk Show, etc.

Apple will most likely update their Podcast app to include a Watch app too.

You can see how much time you have saved at the bottom of the setting screen.

I've saved over 60 hours now. :p

Overcast (or any third party app) will still only play audio from your iPhone so won't work if you leave it at home.

Only Apple can write native watch apps at the moment.

That's really the key issue. As of right now only the music app can store audio locally on the watch. I don't listen to podcasts but I do listen to audiobooks. I was planning on putting audiobooks in to iTunes and syncing using the music app, but recent news regarding iOS 8.4 removing audiobooks from the music app has me worried.

DARN IT! I guess I need to figure out how to covert the podcast to 'music' as a work around. Exactly the same with myself about audiobooks. If I'm not listening to podcasts it's audiobooks.

Smart speed is a really good feature. It makes the conversational podcasts sound like much better. When I turn it off, people sound choppy as they try to think of what to say, and I'm thinking "spit it out!"

Easy enough, just irritating to have to do, when a dedicated podcasts app would solve this.

Right-click in iTunes, specify options and change the Media Type.

Use iTunes? Download music? Right click things?

Hasn't Apple heard of the cloud? It should work. Without needing a Mac. I listen to podcasts every day.

Doesn't the Overcast app work on the watch? It's much better than Apple's podcast app and doesn't rely on iTunes.

Okay — it would require the iPhone — I always have the phone with me but others just have the watch. I hope they fix this with the next watch OS.

I'm with you, love listening to podcasts when running. I resort to control on the iPhone, but like others in the thread I use Overcast. Marco Arment (the developer) has created the watch extension for the app, and by all accounts it looks like the glance for it will be of significant use while out pounding the pavement.
