How about access to all the other things on my phone that Tesla doesn't support? Siris XM, Zoom, Overcast, ABRP are supported by CarPlay but not directly in Tesla. My phone is the hub of my digital life. If my car fit in my pocket, maybe it would be ... but it doesn't.
Bluetooth is your friend, for now. Hopefully Tesla opens the app store in the car so everybody else publishes their ****.

That’s not a reason to for people not to have the option to use CarPlay. I have driven Teslas and besides battery level integration, I prefer Apple Maps.
They won't add CarPlay is because it won't integrate into how FSD works.

Apple Maps = Google Maps these days. Neither is better than the other one. And again, the Google maps integration in the cars is retooled to work better on vehicles. I’m big on Apple, but not blinded.

I agree that both can get you to where you are going, yet I happen to prefer AM interface, so would like to have an option to use this in a Tesla as well.

You don’t like Teslas and you absolutely want CarPlay, so there is no problem, this topic doesn’t interest you.
It does because Tesla has a lot of influence on car design in general, much like the influence Apple has on the tech market, so yes it does.

I review cars as my second job, so plenty of cars that I will never buy are of interest to me.

Like all systems, it takes more than 3 or 4 test drives to feel comfortable and understand the + and the -
I really don't see how CarPlay could integrate smoothly in Tesla eco-system. You will spend your time switching from CarPlay to Tesla system.
I prefer that Tesla brings the missing features to their OS than having to switch between 2 OS.
It's bit like you install Windows in a VM on a Mac. The integration between the 2 OS is quite minimal.
2 different approaches that don't mix very well from an UX point of view.
When I see CarPlay in my wife's car, it's a total mess of integration and duplicate features between the built-in software and CarPlay.

Fair enough. I think a Tesla is the last EV I’d want to own (I review cars), but that’s just me.
Hi oldmacs,
Would love to know why you wouldn't want to own a Tesla?
(I'm also a part time writer (an honorable profession :) and a lover of manual transmission cars, but I really enjoy my Model S...)
cheers,
Marty

Have to pay to use it?? wow
...have to pay to use the cellular connection of the Tesla which is pretty standard across most manufacturers. You can connect to your device as a hotspot OR stream it from your phone connected to your car via Bluetooth.

What about going fully in and just enabling CarPlay?
As a Tesla owner, I thought I would miss CarPlay, but I don't. The only thing that I miss is Waze - but that is Tesla not allowing Waze and less to do with CarPlay.

Well, that is the whole point, you could use Waze and multiple other apps supported by CarPlay if it was enabled in Tesla.

Bluetooth is a bandaid. CarPlay is a much better solution. Tesla maps are ok but there’s no doubt Apple Maps and google maps are vastly superior.

Tesla mixes different sources for maps data.
A part from google, from OSM, from Tesla ...
They also take weather on the trip into account for range prediction (wind, temperature).
They add data required for an intelligent electric vehicle usage.
From what I know, they can't have that in solutions like Apple Maps (never deployed outside Apple ecosystem), Google maps or Waze.
They probably also need some additional data for FSD support (unfortunately only in USA)
It's not so easy to ask to have Google maps or Apple maps instead of a specific navigation system.
Otherwise, you use all integration with car data and it's the same as putting your phone on a dock.

It is 3 reasons. I have no idea why you think Apple Maps is better than the one in the car, it’s far more accurate in car.

Tesla's implantation of Apple Podcasts is missing a big part of the app: custom URLs or subscribed podcasts.
Both of these are missing in the Tesla app.

Any subscription to custom URLs just won't appear. These are usually Patreon or other privately supported podcasts that provide you with your own URL to access the shows without ads or with extra content.

Apparently Teslas has also messed up with Apple podcast premium podcasts, those you pay directly from the Podcast app. You only get the "non-premium" content. Can't attest to this as I'm not currently subscribing to any.

It's such a letdown to know you have a podcast app you can't use because all your most listened to podcasts are actually custom URLs because you love the shows so much you are helping them pay for it.

For driving directions yes, also public transport is better than Google in my experience in the UK.

For reviews however it is garbage and things like street view still isn't available outside certain major cities.

I just find it odd, especially as they can’t even be bothered to support CarPlay
I can see why they don't support CarPlay as most of that functionality is baked in. I just wish the Apple Music app was better.

CarPlay is ok for cars with poor infotainment systems, it’s just an overlay to hide their misses.
I can’t see a way to have CarPlay over Tesla UI in a clean way, have good integration with all onboard systems.
If it’s just to have CarPlay in a window besides the rest of the os, it’s pretty ugly.

Apple Podcasts and music in Tesla are mainly based on Apple web apis.
They have the limitations of Apple apis
