For those people with a few hours to kill either waiting for a pre-ordered iPhone 4 to arrive or camping out to purchase one tomorrow, Apple has posted the user guide (PDF link) for iPhone 4 and iOS 4 for your reading pleasure. The 243-page guide, which is also available in an iPhone-formatted version accessible through the Safari for iPhone, is broken down into 28 chapters and offers information on the features of iOS 4 as they relate to Apple's new iPhone 4 and 3GS devices.

The user guide covers a multitude of topics, from physical features of the iPhone to setup and on through the various software offerings included by default on the devices. Also included are sections on the iTunes Store and App Store, as well as Apple's free iBooks application available separately through the App Store and the iPhone's Nike + iPod capabilities.

I'm just itching for any bit of iphone 4 news. This will keep my happy for a short amount of time :D

Would be nice if they utilized the led flash for notifications and stuff. Wonder if jailbreak community will be able to access it?

many people have been curious about making facetime calls. note in chapter 5 "phone" section, in the facetime part, it says that you can initiate a facetime call without calling the person first via GSM/whatever:

If you had a previous FaceTime video call with someone, you can make another video call with that person by tapping the entry for that call in Recents. Previous FaceTime video calls are indicated by . You can also make a FaceTime video call from Contacts.

also note the image posted in the same section:

pretty nice.

As a user, I can't wait till I get my iPhone4. I hate waiting in lines, so I pre-ordered mine, currently it says it'll ship Jul 15. I'm most excited about the extra screen resolution, I'm thinking that I can fit an entire web page on the screen and actually read the page. Currently, if I try to fit a web on my 3gs, can't really make out the text. Also, looking forward to the 720p video recording, since I have 2 little rug rats. As an iPhone developer, I'm even more excited to see all the apps I can come up with.

I can't tell if that's sarcasm, but I'd bet a lot of money that people will be upgrading loooong before the LED bulb 'burns out'.

I expect many people don't know the technical difference between an LED and an incandescent light bulb.

I'm no engineer but my understanding is that an LED last a very, very long time.

243 pages is significantly longer than the original Macintosh users manual, which included things like "your information does not get lost when you scroll the screen" and "this is a mouse".

I'd like to know why my face keeps muting phone calls when no other iPhone I've ever owned has EVER done that.

did they reverse the microphone/speaker ports? It looks backwards to my 3g. That's gonna make my sound amplifying car mount suck :(

i'm upgrading from a first gen phone. this will be a must read for me. i've got a lot of catching up to do. :)

I'm not seeing the iphone formatted version? Can someone post the direct link? The full size pdf just locked up my iphone when I clicked the "open in ibooks" button. :)

Edit: Nevermind, if I view this page in my iphone and click the link, I get the iphone version.

Edit 2: Looks like they forgot to test it on a 3GS :( The home page comes up, but none of the topic or search buttons work.

User guides usually have a nice tidbit of information I didn't otherwise already know... so I'll give it a flick when I get the chance.
