Hang on, didn't Apple specifically say when they announced the lightning connector that it was going to be around for a long time? Why the rumour of a new one so soon?

Nobody is talking about a new lighting connector. Just upgrading the existing one so that accessories can support 24-bit audio. The cables and connectors will, physically, be exactly the same.

Interesting. Apple's old in-ear 'headphones' were awful. Very uncomfortable (no matter which of the 3 sizes I tried) and sound quality not appreciably better than the standard earbuds.

I bought a pair. The standard headphones had better sound. I've gone back to my Bose in-ear, and are much more comfortable. The Apple ones create a suction in your ear, and you hear every sound your head makes.

How much is Apple going to charge us to update our iTunes library with the new higher quality tunes?

"Apple is also said to be preparing a new Lightning connector to accommodate high-definition playback on Made For iPhone (MFi) audio accessories"

I'm just going by the article, they specifically said Apple is preparing a new lightning connector. It makes more sense for them to upgrade the existing one, but that's what it said.

Of course new Apple in-ear headphones are rumoured to be coming, just days after I bought replacement ear-pods :) If only I knew...

I used to have in-ear headphones from Etymotic and despite all their sonic advantages, I came to the conclusion that paying a lot for everyday headphones is not worth it. The earpods sound great considering their price and like all headphones, they eventually have to be replaced because some part of them gets damaged or they get lost. By all means, spend big on home or office headphones but paying a lot for portable/everyday headphones is a waste of money and the benefits are very small, considering all the environmental noise in most urban environments, public transport, etc.

If they use lightning, that means it's digital signal: pure, but need convert before use.
Let's hope your battery don't drain too fast from the converter, or you can't use headphone while charging.

(I still have the old version, and I will keep stocking them, since they fail every six months. )

If they could fix the corroding cables in the new one that would be great...

No, they're talking about the in-ear headphones, not the EarPods (which, as far as standard earbuds go, are excellent in my opinion).

I understand that fact, thanks. But surely when Apple innovates, they like to release their latest products with their most recent hardware, the iPhone 5s? Obviously the EarPods were not true in-ear-headphones as we traditionally know them. That said, Apple did promote them as their alternative to the ear-bud style headphone, seemingly not wanting to mention their in-ear offering. Did anyone rate them?

At least Apple are now taking audio seriously. That can only be a good thing. I was getting a little tired of always having to purchase separate in-ear-headphones…

There better not be a new connector. I just updated my accessories.

If they do launch upgraded in-ear headphones, don't expect them to be a freebie... that's not the Apple we know and love

I couldn't agree more, so much so I've stockpiled a few in case Apple ever withdraws them for sale. Massively underrated and far better sound quality than ones costing over twice as much (from my own experience)

Were you comparing them to Beats? :)

Cause if you compared them to a set of Sennheiser costing twice as much..... from experience its the opposite. A set of Sennheiser costing the same, sound a lot better.

Unless you want any bass whatsoever.

They're also frighteningly fragile.

Lightening cable instead of 3.5 mm Jack?

Maybe the earphones will plug in to the Lightning connector instead of 3.5 mm jack for HD audio?

Oh <$DEITY> no, it wasn't Beats I was comparing to, off the top of my head it was Etymotic Research ones I tried and they just didn't do anything for me despite being twice the price.

The Apple in-ear headphones are excellent as long as you can get a decent seal in your ear - that tends to make the bass sound just fine, however they definitely aren't bass-heavy. I agree about being fragile, although the pair I have are only starting to come apart a little after about 3 years of heavy use, but I am always careful with my stuff and make sure to store them in the supplied case when I'm not using them.

Audio is extremely subjective so while I think they're excellent, you may not. It's the same reason I've gone through about 10 different set of quality headphones until I found a pair of BeyerDynamic ones that I liked the sound signature of.

It's just a tweak of the cable. The new cable would work with old devices and the old cable would work with new devices (but not provide HD audio). They might also silently fix the issue that has caused the cables to fray prematurely.

 Hmmm.. I tend to agree with you there. I guess we could just wait for the AppleBeats in-ear headphones and drop £300 for them then?!

ha ha ha just reading your response to Beats, I at least know that you appreciate music :) Interesting that you mentioned the Etymotic, I also got a pair of those, and returned them. They had good reviews but, I just did not like the sound signature.

My biggest gripe was getting a comfortable seal. Never felt comfortable.
