Apple is preparing to release a minor iOS 17.6.1 update for the iPhone, according to a post shared today by an anonymous leaker on X, formerly known as Twitter. The leaker has a private account, so we are not identifying it or linking to it, but they have proven to be a consistently accurate source for upcoming iOS updates.

MacRumors can independently confirm that Apple is internally testing an iOS 17.6.1 update, which is present in our analytics logs.

Nothing is known about iOS 17.6.1, beyond the leaker claiming that the update will have a build number of 21G93. However, the update will almost certainly be a minor one, especially given that Apple is focused on iOS 18 and iOS 18.1 beta testing. iPhone users still running iOS 17 can expect the update to include bug fixes and/or security patches.

It is unclear when iOS 17.6.1 will be released to the public, but updates revealed by this leaker typically become available within a few weeks after they post on social media. The update will likely be released in the first half of August.

Well if their X account is private, then the posts are also private anyway. If their account were public, would you still have hid their identity from your post?

I still think iCloud synching of email and iMessage is a bit suspect. Perhaps they’ll provide a fix to an intermittent issue that popped up in iOS 17.

So the update with new features yesterday is only for the old 18.0 betas and not for the newer 18.1 betas? So for the new photos app and such if you are on the new newer 18.1 betas have to wait for a beta update specific for 18.1?

Get iOS 17 as robust as possible, before iOS 18 drops….always a good strategy.
A better strategy would be to leave iOS 17 buggy and sluggish (iOS 17.5.1 ran sluggish and felt buggy compared to recent 17.6 update though) and then Tim Cook comes out during September iPhone 16 event to tell people that iOS 18 is the best iOS version ever 😂 to get more people to adopt iOS 18

Yes, two different development paths.
I’m sure a new 18.1 beta will follow very soon.

Apple software is just terrible lately. I regret the iOS 18 beta and would revert back fully if I could but the Apple Watch cannot without going to the idiot bar. I’ve lost faith in Apple as a company. The level of polish just isn’t here.

Hoping for 18.1 today. But who knows
You’re talking about the refinement of a beta of a major iOS version not being to your standards?
And you’re upset cuz you made the mistake of putting a major beta on your Apple Watch knowing full well that you can’t go back?

There’s a reason they call them betas. If you’re expecting them to be without issues and can’t handle the frustration of bugs then you’re not the right candidate for the beta testing.

I’m speaking about how iOS 17 wasn’t very polished and hoped many of my old issues would be resolved knowing from past betas what to expect. And surprise to me, but the quality of the new OS at this point is so awful it now does make 17 look polished. The standard keeps being lowered is my point. You’ll see when you get iOS 18

My brother in Christ, why are you participating in a beta if you can’t handle an “unpolished” OS?

This is getting really tiresome. These morons are constantly relying on xx.x.1 releases to “fix” their mistakes. Should’ve listened to my gut and waited before updating all my devices to 17.6.
Could you elaborate on your issue here?

There’s no mistake there. X.y are feature updates and they get refined along with security fixes in X.y.1.
17.6 already fixed a ton of security exploits and there might be a need for another fix considering iOS 17 is at the end of its cycle.

iOS 17 looks quite polished to me. Battery life had always been slightly unpredictable but seems to have improved with 17.6.

I did try iOS 18 b3 on my 13P for a few days and haven’t encountered any showstoppers. Reverted to 17 when I chose not to have to think about updating every week.

Obviously 17 will be more polished than 18 when 18 is on a beta….

Good. 17.6.1 will be my update then. With Apple playing its unproductive and frankly childish political games on the backs of its customers, iOS is currently the most useless update ever.
