Apple retail store location at Fifth Avenue Mall in Anchorage, Alaska
ifoAppleStore reports that new job listings from Apple confirm earlier rumors that the company is preparing to open a retail store in the Fifth Avenue Mall in Anchorage, Alaska. The new store would be the company's first in Alaska and furthest-north of all of Apple's stores around the world.
According to the original tip, the fit-out is underway inside the former Eddie Bauer space on the second level of the downtown mall. Based on construction schedules, the store will open in September.
We have received similar word that construction on the store is underway.

The opening of the Anchorage store will leave just seven U.S. states without an Apple retail store: Arkansas, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Wirelessly posted (This odd thing that I hold: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

No apple store in Vermont?? I'm not from the USA, but in my recent visit to the East coast, Vermont seemed the most 'Apple' state in their liberal tastes and style.

From an European perspective, many of the ideas and concepts I see coming out of Vermont seem almost un-American in terms of being sensible and community orientated (to an European anyway).

Big hi to my Vermont mates - I still have the Magic Hat stickers :) I'm sure you'll get an Apple store in Burlington soon, even if it has to be in a log cabin and sell prayer beads with each iMac ...

Having lived many years in London and Spain, and visited Vermont while living in Boston, I have to agree. I didn't know there wasn't an Apple store located in Vermont, especially as a lot of New Yorker's and Bostonians spend time in Manchester and such for Winter holiday.

AWESOME!!!

I live in Alaska, near Anchorage. Whenever I have to get my Mac repaired or have a question, I have to go to some independent Apple retailer. All of them in Anchorage are bad. Now I can actually go to a real Apple store! Talk with the guys in blue polo shirts!

Though it is too bad that Eddie Bauer moved... ;)

Boy, are you going to be disappointed.

I can see the Apple store from my house :)

Can you see Russia from the Apple Store? That's what everybody is dying to know. :D

Kidding aside, based on the comments from Alaskans here, it sounds like an official Apple presence will be a welcome change from the third parties of the present, so I hope this works out well for them.

I was just in that mall today, the "new" Eddie Bauer is open down on the first floor.

The two Apple retailers in town are not very good, I'll agree. But Apple Stores are not necessarily that wonderful either. The "Genius Bar" is often a misnomer.

Boy, are you going to be disappointed.

Indeed. Still, I welcome another Apple retail outlet - though I predict it will kill the Mac Store down on Dimond Blvd, unless they fire all the surly hipsters that work there.

No! Not across from the Hot Topic store!

We already have too many scene kids abusing Photo Booth.

Right across from Emo's-R-Us! Though, I'd have to say better for it to be Hot Topic than Ambercrombie/Fitch.. at least HT stocks old skool shirts.

BL.

Yeah, if they are going to put one in Montana, Missoula would be the place! Home to U of Montana, 2nd largest city in the state, no sales tax. But, we are pretty sparsely populated, but if Alaska can support one, we can too.

Apple Store: Montana

If Alaska might be getting an Apple store, then perhaps Montana next? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

I would have first thought to place one in Billings, but Missoula would be pretty good idea, especially with the liberal university there.

When I visited Billings a few months ago, I noticed that they have added a couple of new stores that I hadn't seen years before, and it seems like Billings tends to be the first for some stores (Toys R Us, Red Lobster, etc.).

They can buy a new My Chemical Romance shirt and then walk across the mall to the Apple Store to tell their other emo friends about it on Facebook.

I lolled

This is awesome news! It's taken entirely too long. Glad to see that there's some fellow Anchorage MacRumors folks!

God knows there are plenty of Mac users. Ever go into a Kaladi Brothers? It's like a promotional event for Apple :D

There's really no comparison. 40% of the population of Alaska is in the Anchorage metro area. Anchorage, at 286,000, is the 68th largest city in the USA. Billings is 244th largest, and Missoula doesn't make the top 275-- actually, at 68K, isn't even close.

Nice. Yes, the other Mac re-sellers in Anchorage blow chuncks. This will be welcome if for no other reason than to be able to get a custom build up close and personal just like you can from the on-line store...but from an actual person.
